Putting a Remund electronic distributor ,6 volts with generator ,on my 36..I read somewhere that you need a surge protector when you run the generator...Any thoughts?....Thanks...Jack

A zenior diode cuts out the voltage spikes over it's specified amount...

I am running 12v a generator with petronics , and planning to put one to the power in side of the coil, after a resister...

Ford's method of regulating the electric system was the nichrome "resistor" that varied the current flow by increasing the temperature, and resistance, of the windings as input went up to prevent burning the points and coil. Crude, but effective, and inadequate for the modern electronic components. The original Ford distributor is more than adequate for all but racing. Save your money.

Superreal..I have owned the prtonix for several years and though it would gain me some reliabity...

They are definitely reliable. The first one I installed lasted for 25 years. It only failed when I had a test done on the advance curve and the fellow hooked it up wrong.

I've had a Remund Pertronix on for over 15 years and never had any problems. At about the same time of installation I had rebuilt my generator with a new armature and brushes so out put is pretty stable. No surge protector. This seems to be something that recently was suggested. This is a 6 volt positive ground installation.

Why not play it safe and use one. I was told by Mallory to use a surge protector so I did . I went through a module before I put one , been 10 years now with no trouble. I don't like fooling around with that dist, down in front.

I have no surge protection.
Both of mine are 12 volt systems using an alternator and solid core Packard 440 spark plug wires. Both coils are rewound originals (for 12 volts)

Kahuna...I am running a 5volt generator and that is why someone suggested the surge protector. Apparantly ther are voltage spikes with the generator...

There are exceptions to every rule, and I admire those that have lasted. We have taken more off than installed over time. The cure would be a zener controlled circuit with power transistor output equal to demand that would smooth power flow and catch the spikes. All solid state containing equipment is vulnerable to poor power regulation. A properly set up stock ignition will run ten thousand miles or more reliably.
