Rebuilt generator overheating

I just installed a fresh rebuilt 6v generator in my 1941 ford truck with a 8ba flathead. After hookup and 2 minutes of engine run, engine was shut off, All Switches off, generator was extremely hot to the touch for an hour or more afterwords. Only after battery was disconnected did generator cool down. Any ideas? Thanks
