How to adjust water pump packing nut?

Hi,

I have the normal water pump. What is the correct tightness of the pack nut (the one requiring a special key). Is there a special way of adjusting it correctly?

Here is a link from Snyder's, with a word of caution to tighten it gradually, and just enough to stop the leak. This is the link for the special tool.
I have an original water pump, and I bought packing off ebay, but I've never used it and dont know how. - Chuck

They forgot to mention that you should only tighten it w/the engine running and the pump shaft turning.

So if I'm driving 5000 mi across USA it is just a matter of checking the nut on a daily basis and turn it a bit if it is leaking? Just continuous adjustments? What spare part do I need if I have reached the "bottom" of the nut?

More packing! Always carry a spare.
