Always make sure the Spark Advance Lever is in the Full up position when starting. It's the lever on the left side of steering wheel.

Welcome. You sure found the right site to ask and receive help from these guys and gals for anything "A" related. Good luck and be sure to use the "SEARCH" feature at the top of the page.

Spark lever (left) all the way up.
Throttle lever (right) down about 1/4-1/3
Gas valve on (under dash)
Key on
Press starter
Pull/push choke until it starts.

Pull spark down a little and listen to her purrrrrr

When was the last time it's been started?

Like everything else it is simple once known. Here is the basics to start assuming it is a running car. http://modelabasics.com/Starting%20&%20Driving.htm

I'd only pull the choke out for one or two chugs or you'll be flooding that puppy and never get it going. Lightly file or sand the points to make sure crud hasn't built up.

If it has been a long time since it was started-like years. the you may want to drop the pan to verify there is no sludge, dirt etc. in the pan. Then add oil adjust the timing if it is off, check the points and plugs and fire her up. Remember, never throw anything away, join a club and drive the wheels off her.

How about a picture of the gift.
We all love seeing Model A's, we don't why, it must be a sickness, but none of us are looking for the cure
