crazy miss

My 59 AB has developed a miss. Starts and runs fine then while driving it will miss just once then go for a while and miss again. It's like the ignition is turned off and immediately back on. I intended to hook up my old analog volt meter to the input side of the coil and have it in the cab while I drive to see if there is a loss of power on the input indicating a loose wire or some such. But, after the fire in my shop last week I'm not sure if the volt meter still exists or works. Guess i ought to look at my Fluke digital while I'm in that cabinet. What a mess, I've spent two days just cleaning up one tool box and part of another.

Anyone have an idea about the miss? I need to get it resolved quickly as I need to drive the truck 40 miles to another town to have a restoration guy see what he can do with the smoke damage. I don't have a trailer so I can't haul it.

If they don't stay broke it's hard to fix um. I would run a jumper to the coil and drive it, that would take a lot of things out the question about ignition.

A intermittant miss when hot is usually the condensor breaking down with current flow and heat!! Points , distributor etc seldom are heat related on/off type missfires......

What exact distributor do you have on the engine???

I should have said to the resistor, no don't bypass the resistor.

I have already tried a new condenser, no relief.

I have the numbers for the distributor somewhere in my notes but, what with
our recent fire I will have to wait a few days to look it up.

You can check the ignition switch by placing a temporary jumper across it. You did not mention the year of the vehicle? Saw a 32 hot rod that was in storage when a fire occurred, the hot rod received just smoke damage. The entire vehicle was disassembled painted and rebuilt. Insurance payment. Good Luck!
