early 28 motor mounts

My early 28 continues to amaze me with how few parts it shares with other Model As. A forum member supplied me with these. Says he has many more AR parts. I can't wait! Wish I had them a few years ago. When I took out the motor I found the old later motor mounts were broken in several pieces. Don't know why the motor didn't drop out on its own.

How many have seen some before? Cast steel?

Could be. The guy that sold them to me lives in BC.

Let's straighten this out. The first generation Model A rear engine mounts were a two piece mount with the lower piece riveted to the frame rail. Refer back to pictures of Dean Drenzek's A495. They are the first type. In November '27 the rear mounts were changed to a one piece design with the rectangular holes only 1/4" from the inside (see attached pictures.) Then in January 28 the rectangular hole was moved back to 1/2" from the inside. These were then used through the remainder of production. Mark's picture above I believe shows the third generation mounts.

You are correct Mr. Karr in all four ways.

So far so good.
The "seam" changed from this style (photo below) too the later style with the wide gap seam..

Anybody with that style seam....?

So, the ones in Steve Pluckers last pictures are the 2nd generation?

Steve,

I think you mean Gary Karr...and yes, those are the second generation.

Re: early 28 motor mounts

Dudley and Tom, where is there information on the difference in the styles of seams on the rear mounts? I have seen various degrees of spacing on the back seam of mounts but assumed it was simply differences in manufacturing. There is nothing in the RG&JS that addresses this difference.

All the things that I look at , cars and parts, are mostly 28-29's, so that's
what I observed. Which is not a great source for being accurate..
I also remember having a conversation with either Doug or Marco about
it, some time back.

I was on the phone with Tom yesterday and had him post his mount, since
he's a 30-31 person, and figured he would have the later style.

Ya,...it would be nice to have a time line..

Re: early 28 motor mounts

I showed pictures of the two different seam gaps, and asked about it several years ago, but never got a definitive answer. It seems like I most often see the tight seam on the 1928-9 cars, so I just assume that's correct. I wonder if anyone ever saw blueprints, which should call out the gap?

Re: early 28 motor mounts

Here is the "Part Release" SCOOP on A-5090-B Engine Support Bracket, Rear.

11/12/27: New part, adopted;

11/15/27: Number of holes in flange increased from 4 to 6;

1/13/28: Moved two rectangular holes out 1/4", changing distance between holes and inside of support from 1/4" to 1/2";

4/6/28: Changed thickness from #9 USS Ga. (0.151/0.161) to #8 USS Ga. (0.167/0.177);

8/6/28: changed diameter of bolt holes from 17/32" to 9/16, for convenience in assembling;

12/6/29: Corners at engine ende of slots for wrench changed from 1/8" radius to 1/4" radius (So there you can distiunugish what the 30-31's look like!).

There is no mention of the "Gap" as seen in the above photos...As Tom says, they might be seen on the drawings as the FORD Archives.

I sent Dudley a note earlier suggesting the increase in the thickness of the steel stock may have played a roll in the forming and shape of the split.

That would be interesting...If I can find my caliper I will check that thought...Or anyone else can as that goes.

Re: early 28 motor mounts

The mount that I pictured was off an unmolested November 28.

The material measures correct for 8 gauge..
The bolt holes are 9/16"..
The radius, I assume is for the inside, since it changes from the "center", is close
to an 1/8"...

"There is no mention of the "Gap" as seen in the above photos...As Tom says, they might be seen on the drawings as the FORD Archives."

I'm real curious about the "gap" and the time frame..
