1940 Ford anti chatter rods?
 

Today ,I've been crawling under the coupe trying to see if Ive got the anti chatter rods fitted.The car is RHD and I can see the passenger side rod but no sign of one on the drivers side.the exhaust,starter,pedals,and gear linkages are all crammed into the area where the rod should be and I really can't see how one could fit.

Was only one rod fitted?or can someone provide a good clear photo of the set up....I realise that the RHD issue complicates things somewhat due to the starter and pedals etc or on that side, whereas the LHD will have more clearance having the pedals on the opposite side to the starter.

The car drives real nice but judders when changing down from third to second and it bugs me, not to mention it will not be doing the clutch and components any favours either.

I think they should both be there. That said, many believe they are a waste of time - and Ford eliminated them in about '46 with a different rear transmission mount. It can't be good to just have one, though, because forces will not be properly distributed.

On a side note, are they critical on a '32 5w coupe? Not trying to hi-jack.

Thanks for the replies....I think I might be able to get the car up in the air on the hydraulic lift next weekend so I can take a proper look......sliding under with a lamp is not the best way to see things.

Also, it looks like I've developed an oil leak since I lowered the front end...looks like the oil is coming out of the bell on the torquetube...thick ,almost like grease, all over the pivot on the wishbone.Im going to try some of the leak- cure additive first, the stuff that rejuvenates the rubber seals...supposedly anyhow.Ill report back with the results ,as and when.

I am pretty sure that the pedal setup etc is the same on a RHD as it is on the LHD. Here is a picture of my setup after I just converted to hydraulic brakes. As you can see the anti chatter rod still fits, albeit snugly.

Off subject a bit, but it took me a long time to do the conversion because I wanted to rebuild the pedal assembly and it was very hard to find a 91A-7526 bushing. I finally found one in southern California. For those that might still need one I think he still has a few. Elmer Swift at [email protected]. The cost is $35.00 plus $6.00 for postal flat rate box. They are NOS.

Ford called those rods "engine stay rods" I believe. They had more to do with keeping the engine from being pushed forward by the torque tube when starting out then anything related to clutch chatter. I think too soft of motor/transmission mounts are a bigger cause of these type of clutch issues.
