head gasket

When using a copper head gasket and A "Z" head, aluminum; does the smooth side of the gasket go to the block or against the head? thank you

Re: head gasket

You must install with the large water passages on the end, matching the holes in the block, One end is larger than the other.

Large water passage goes to the rear - no matter what.

In any case the smooth side goes down the reason being that the edge of the fire ring will after time leaves it mark and it's easier to mill the head then the block. Don't forget to seal with copper coat.

When torquing down the aluminum Z head, can I do it when the motor is hot like a cast iron head, or should I wait until it cools down. I love the power increase that I got from the higher compression.
