8ba fan assembly bearing broken Hello guys .after 15 months of often tedious work restoring my imported 51 F1 pickup its all finished ,it passed the u.k m.o.t (ministry of transport test) runs sweet and now ready for registration then hopefully a summer of driving and showing and MANY thanks for the answers and help from the barn on this project . the one fly in the ointment is when driving it to the test centre the fan bearing broke up and its now all floppy .I,m going to attempt to take it apart probably tomorrow ,I havnt a clue whether this will be a simple job or how to begin and will I need a press to remove /install the bearing ? has anybody done this and could you give me some pointers before I start , many thanks ... Jim.

Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken Jim....check out this link on our website: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ervicetips.htm
This explains the fans used in your truck. Technically, it's not the 8BA (passenger car fan). You should have the 21A oil filled type fan. Repair parts have become scarce this past year. I do have the impeller & shaft, but not the spindle bearing by itself. I recently found some of the complete hub & sheave assemblies with new internal parts. Check with our sales office this week and we can let you know what we have. |
Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken Mac,
That is some very good information about that fan assembly. I have one on my truck and have been using motor oil. I will switch to gear oil. Thanks |
Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken It seems like a resourceful inventor could build a sealed cartridge bearing system that could fit entirely inside the ample hub housing. all you would need is a machined shaft, a couple of bearings, and a tube running through the middle of the hub to press the outer bearing diameter into.
It could look 100% stock on the outside, which is the best part. The bearings could also hold up for a very long time, given the low mileage a lot of our vehicles see. |

I,ll take it apart to see whats what and take it from there ,if all else fails I have a unit from a v8 pilot that possibly could be used maybe short term ,it probably has a narrower belt but at a glance looks similar , I,ll make a start today and contact your sales people if needed , many thanks again , Jim. |
Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken i have two 8ba engins & they both have sealed bearings not the oil bath type like on the 59ab.

Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken The 49-53 passenger car fans do, in fact, have a sealed bearing in a completely different hub assembly. This was ONE complete assembly from Ford....the fan, the sheave, the hub & bearing, and the mounting bracket. Ford did NOT sell any separate service parts for this assembly.....it was only sold as the complete assy.
For whatever reason, Ford continued using the oil filled type fan hub in the trucks, even after they had switched to the sealed bearing type in the passenger cars for 1949. One odd exception to this was the 1949 Mercury, which still used the oil filled fan assy. A few different fan blade diameters were used over the span of production of the oil filled fan design. However, they ALL used the same hub and sheave assy. Here is the list of models using this hub & sheave: 1942-48 Ford cars 1942-49 Merc cars 1942-52 Ford trucks This entire discussion refers to the fan assemblies used on the flathead V8's. The six cylinder models used a completely different fan....no interchange of parts. |
Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken 37,
The live bearing fan ass'y (not the oil filled type) is repairable but in my experience the only way to remove the live bearing shaft from the mount is by drilling the shaft to relieve the interference fit , not press fit. I have a 60 ton press and it would not budge the shaft until I drilled the shaft...carbide drill 1200 rpm, yikes. Anytime I find a good fan ass'y at a swap meet I buy it, there's always a demand. Like Mac says Ford only sold these things as an ass'y not parts. BY THE WAY MAC WILL WE SEE YOU AND SHELLY AT GETTYSBURG ???? Charlie ny |
Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken Great info. I, too, have only 40 wt. in the fan reservoir currently. Would it be blasphemous to augment that with some STP type additive to thicken it up?

Re: 8ba fan assembly bearing broken thanks for your reply guys. the pilot hub/fan system I mentioned isn't pilot ,I don't own one of these cars but I acquired this unit a few years ago off a friend who had a pilot so I assumed it was from an English ford v8 pilot late 40s early 50s ,they have apparently the fan attached to the dynamo, anyway the spare unit I have is almost the same as mine but I have 4 fan blades the spare has 6 smaller blades,a bit rusty and when I topped it with oil it seeps out ,there is a rubber seal at the end which is perished and I,m not sure how to take it apart as there is nothing obvious like nuts ,bolts ,screws the bearing seems o.k but with a small amount of play and it very slightly snatches when turned by hand , not quite sure what to do ,I think I will sleep on it ,thanks Jim.
