installing a headliner - package tray
 

'40 coupe - I noticed the headliner was installed at the factory before the package tray was installed. that's logical.

Now....is it common or uncommon to remove the package tray when installing a new headliner?

If you want to keep it looking both nice and original you should remove the package tray. To install the new headliner you have to remove all the interior except the door panels, so you might as well do it right so it looks top notch without any sags or wrinkles.

Fordy ,just a question ,I started the interior on my 39 coupe 18 months ago then I imported from Illinois to the u.k a 51 F1 so the 39 went on hold ,I,m now back on it and am ready to cover the tray ,the cover I got from LBB is dark brown vynil, I,v never seen this in photos of other cars they always seem to be headlining material or a light colour , is the photo of yours vynil?

when I did the headlining in my 39 coupe the tray had to come off to attach/glue the headliner to the ridge that the tray sits on,good luck , Jim.

37coop. The vinyl package tray vinyl material that LBB has in their kit is INCORRECT. What you see in that photo is the LBB vinyl. I found out it was incorrect years later. My original package tray material was the same as the headliner when I bought the car (used) in 1963. I don't think vinyl cloth was invented before 1940, but oil cloth probably was.This package try question was discussed last year on Fordbarn with "Kube" giving the correct info. He is an expert on restoring 40 Fords and is writing a much needed restoration book.

You can get the cardboard from any upholstery shop.

fordman, Be sure your headliner is "shrunk" into place, nice and firm with no wrinkles BEFORE you reinstall your package tray. I used an upholstrey steamer. DO NOT glue the edge of the package tray to the headliner. Use the welting between the edge of the package tray and the headliner to give it all a nice finished appearance.

thanks Fordy,i read all the postings you mentioned, I,m disappointed with LBB,the vinyl they gave me with the kit is very dark brown almost black and very shiny and a large grain,the upholstery is a beige pattern and a beige headliner ,I feel if I fitted this the contrast would shout at me ,i bought the kit in 1997 and it has been hanging around my house since then and the headlining colour would probably have faded so if I bought some more from LBB the colour probably wouldn't match and I havnt any spare ,a bit of thinking required I think , thanks for your help , Jim.

37coop, I bet you could find some lighter colored cloth welting in an upholstery shop in Kent that would look great. Or an upholstery shop could easily sew up a piece for you from some mohair cloth like your headliner.

Blimey many thanks you have certainly gone the extra distance for me I didn't realise I had so many upholstery shops on my doorstep ,I think I will take a sample of the seat material and headlining ,visit and see what they suggest and what I think ,thanks again ....I really couldn't live with what L.B.B has given me ,I wonder how many of their customers are thinking their interior is correct, Jim.
