S.S Aries muffler
 

Just wondering: Has anyone painted a S.S. muffler? I just bought one, because of the longevity, but I hate the gaudy out of place look. Any suggestions? Chuck

You can lightly sandblast it or sand it to remove the shine. I also have one, but don't mind the shine. Sure beats the rust!

I spent an hour+ on mine with a maroon scotch brite pad to kill the shine and make it look more like the original plain unfinished steel. Then the weld broke, despite my using a 'slip fit' clamp as recommended. Thats another story for another thread, well beaten on the old fordbarn. Vince may have something about Aries SS mufflers on his website??

See what happens when you use ethanol gas! The darn stuff even eats the welds on your muffler! LOL :)

To answer one of your questions, Yes I have painted the Aries muffers on both my Model A's. I did scruff up the outside with a Scotch bright pad first. My problem is finding a good color of High Temp paint. The first one looks great, but the last one with a different brand of paint, not so great.

Chuckie, Steve Brieting Talked of doing the same. Might check. Is powder coating an option or does that effect heat transfer issues.

That picture of the broken weld looks like a pretty thin stainless steel.
Machine robot weld?

Powder paint won't stick to the hot ss substrate. Burns off.
Like in a burn-off [bake-off] oven that ramps up to about 850 deg F and holds for three hours and ramps back down to ambient temperature.

But 'Frit' will. That's a substitute for porcelain.
But is a powder that is melted onto the substrate.
Think of a Weber Kettle.
Need a 1700 deg F oven, at 750 deg F and above it's called a furnace.

Tacoma Bob has the answer. Too shiney? Why not wrap the exhaust with that heat tape used for turbos? Motor cycle shop.

Skip........Frit could be what I'm thinkin. I know my brother had his headers on his t-bucket done at the local powder coater and many miles and lots a smiles later all still looks new.

Chuck, I have the definitive solution to your problem. We install the shiny one on my car and you put the old rattling one back on your car. The other solution (albeit not beneficial to me) is to use it as is and not allow people to look under the car.
