thanks to Fred/H.L.

Just wanted to say thanks to Fred K of Or. and H.L. Chauvin for their write ups on the front end alignment. Between the two I was able to nail the alignment dead on-after I lined up the front and back wheels.

Hi Mike,

You are welcome.

My 1930 Briggs Town Sedan, (same color as yours), was wandering all over the road when I first got it a few years back.

The front wheels were toed "OUT" .......... about 2-1/2" if I remember correctly.

Few realize that the plus (+) or minus (-) 1/32" of an inch toe in adjustment is actually only about a miniscule (+) 0.031".

In my humble opinion, this is far too small a dimension to be judged by using often suggested curtain rods to set toe in on 80+ years old front wheels that are usually already warped.

After setting toe in, I could turn loose the steering wheel for a few seconds & the car would not pull to one side.

1930artdeco & H. L. Chauvin would you tell me where your write-ups are pertaining to the front end alignment. I would like to read them. Thanks

I with you Robert it would help me when I put mine back together. And I have a old measuring stick made for just what were doing.

Re: thanks to Fred/H.L.

I used 'front end alignment' in the search function. I ran across several about toe-in that were written. I read H.L.'s thread but could not picture what he was talking about until I saw that Fred K took pictures of his board. That I will admit to stealing, idea wise and made my own.

One thing that was not in his thread that probably should be, is to make sure the the front wheels line up with the back wheels. I went back and forth between the front wheels lining them things up. Reassembled the drag link, then I tightened up the plugs to were I could get the pins in (but not in yet). Did my adjustment and when I was satisfied that I had good toe-in, I put the pins in and was done.

Both of my wheels have a small amount of wobble to them so according to the tape I have 3/16 toe-in, but factoring in the wheels I am down to 1/16.

That is what I did, hope it is correct. Either way she tracks straight.

Mike
