glasspacks I want to install a dual glasspack exhaust system on my stock 1939 ford deluxe 2 door sedan. I am looking for that 50's cool sound. Which make of glasspacks is recommended? Some say installing headers is a waste of time. I am not looking for improved performance---only sound. Are headers worth considering or will they not do much for me? Jon Laing

Re: glasspacks I installed Red's Headers and Smithy mufflers on my '41. Love the sound. To me it is just right. They have been on the car for 16 years and no problems or rust out of the mufflers

Brockman Mellow Tone 12" glass packs (18" overall) on a stock/mild flathead are pure '50s and hard to beat, IMO. :) |
Re: glasspacks Jon, I run steel packed Brockman Mellow tone mufflers on most of our Flatheads, coupled with Red's Headers. I can tell you (from my experience) the headers do make a difference in cooling and also enhance the sound.;)

Re: glasspacks I run the steel tube headers, "Cherry-Bomb" glass packs and echo cans.

Re: glasspacks I run mellow tone glass packs on my 57 Chevy, for 20 plus years , don't remember the brand name, but a beautiful sound.

Re: glasspacks Anyone ever try Porter's? How do they sound?
|
Re: glasspacks I run Red's headers and Brockman steel packs. Everyone loves them. Also when I pull into a show people come over saying they know it's a flathead from the sound.

Re: glasspacks Brockman and Reds headers are both Amercan made plus the sound is great ... OLD....BILL

Re: glasspacks 37' 21 stud: reds headers, 1 3/4" twin system. Had 22" smithys on and made no sound, took them out , too loud [didn't sound right]. Now have 12" open perforated glass packs [no name brand?], Still not perfect but ok. Judging by others try the Porters.

Re: glasspacks size of pipes can make or break the sound of the mufflers
1 3/4" pipes w/cherry bombs on mine |
Re: glasspacks Fenton headers and Brockman's .(duals)

Personally, I'm with Joe, above. I've had the Smithy's for 12 or 13 years, no problems, and I like the sound. I've got 1-3/4 pipes, with full tail-pipes. I agree on glasspacks - a little too much db with steel-packs, for my taste. I also can't live with 'straight-pipes', same reason. And, the authorities in my area aren't too crazy about straight-pipes, either. As for headers, maybe read JWL's book - headers will not help performance on the street. And, they have a 'tinny' sound that I don't personally care for. And, I don't like messing with the fit and install. JMO I've got Imco's (glasspacks) on another car. I'm ok with them, too. But, it's my understanding that they are no longer available - defunct company. I've got a single Smithy on a 34, with a short, turn-out tail pipe. I also like it for sound, but it's a little 'quiet' - not like duals. Just gentle mellow. And, finally, I've got a pair of 'Blue-Streaks', Allied Mfg Inc, Benicia CA, on another 34. I'll bet no one has heard of these. I've had them for about 25-30 years, and I've been happy with them. Here's my question for the 'muffler-guru's'... Does anyone here remember a company that manufactured mufflers, in the 1950's, in Pasadena, on west Green St ??? The name ??? And, were they glass-packs, or steel-packs ?? (I'm 'old-school', and would like to find out who these folks were. I'd be on the hunt for a pair of their mufflers, just because. (I'm from Pasa)) Thanks. |
Re: glasspacks I'am still trying to think, right now I'am going to say..."MICHELL" ..muff.?? he had a model A pickup with a Olds 88 engine hydro trans ?? it was dark green with black fenders,,, right ?? and they were glass pack. had a pair ,,,watched em being made..then what was the cross Green?? .... OLD.....BILL
