Pressure regulator for 81 carbs
 

I have a Riley Two Port head on my model "a". I have to use an electric fuel pump because the carbs are higher than the gravity feed fuel tank.There is no mechanical fuel pump on the model"a". I have been using a fuel regulator from Speedway Motors that is chromed and adjustable with a dial on top to adjust the pressure.
The pressure readings are all over the place. What pressure regulator should i use? 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pounds is the pressure range that is recommended.

I have the same Speedway regulator on my '32 with an 81 sitting on top. It runs happily for me at 3 psi. I had thought at one time I had fuel starvation at 2 psi so I bumped it up a little. That's on a Red Ram hemi, though...a little bigger engine but not a lot more rpm than a healthy banger.
If your pressure readings are fluctuating while the pump is on, check for problems with the pump or a restriction in the line. It should read steady.

I have had good luck with the pressure regulator you have. I run it at a lot lower pressure-1.5 psig. The float cut off valve on 81 and 97 carbs will be overrun in the 3.5 range.

The pressure variation indication will be dependent on your gauge. If your gauge is right on the fuel line, it will have lots of variation because of the way the fuel pump pulses. I use a remote dash mounted gauge on my speedster with a very small line. The air in the line dampers the swing in the pressure reading.

I had poor results with the Holley regulator.

Another vote for the Holley 1-4 regulator. I have mine set to 2 1/2 lbs for the Stromberg 97.

I tried the Speedway regulator on dual Holley 92's and it was useless. No matter what the setting, it would not "pass enough gas," so to speak, to run more than a fast idle. Got the Napa low pressure electric pump and it works fine with just over 2 psi, no regulator. It is mounted on the frame accessible under the floorboard, so maybe a little extra distance reduced pressure at teh carbs.

I like old BILL but that dial regular is JUNK.send it back and get the holley you adjust the presure with an allen wrench with agauge in line have a goodday.
