Water pump shaft loose My water pump shaft moves forward and back 1/8 to 1/4 inch, that seems excessive. It makes a dull tapping noise. Packing nut is snug and it doesn't leak. Does it need more packing material? What is supposed to take up the slack? Is there something else I should check?

Re: Water pump shaft loose There is likely a problem inside the head where the pump shaft rides. Often times this is worn. A quick fix for you is to purchase a collar that fits on the front of the pump underneath the pulley on the fan. Look up part number 12500 on the Bratton's website.

Re: Water pump shaft loose You need a waterpump collar on the shaft, under the fan, to limit endplay. Waterpump collars are available from all Model A parts supplyers.

Re: Water pump shaft loose One of the guys in the local club had a two piece that you could put just behind the packing nut to limit the back and forth play. Didn't need to pull the fan to install.

Re: Water pump shaft loose TinCup,
" behind the packing nut ", I think that's WRONG. The only thing behind is the bushing. Dudley |
Re: Water pump shaft loose Yeah I thought that two. The guy that installed the two piece pulled the shaft out toward the radiator. Then placed the collar behind the packing nut. It rides against the back of the nut and keeps the shaft from moving back and forth. I used the collar shown on mine.
