Drier Sock Poor Coolant Filter Chioce

This past two months I've been loosing a lot of coolant, like 6 quarts to drive 20 miles at 45 MPH. I thought my head gasket must be leaking at higher speed, but as I pulled the top hose tonight I found the drier sock was missing. Tomorrow I'll remove the radiator, fill it with water, and turn it upside down and hope the drier sock comes out. It sure looked like nylon, but it must be some cheap fiber that won't take antifreeze.:mad:

Maybe I need to find a real pair of nylons to act as a filter.:)

I had posted some time ago that I had used a SS metal washing machine hose filter, (from I think Wal-Mart), inside my upper Model A radiator hose -- secured SS filter with a smaller rubber radiator hose inside the Model A hose -- never checked it lately -- but anti-freeze stays clean.

I'm going to look for something to use for a filter today. I just went out and pulled the radiator, but it won't be light out for another hour so I can take it to the backyard and backflush it. I hope the sock comes out in one piece.

Guys, some nice filters offered on the bay, a little pricey but no clogs or restrictions.

H. L. aren't you restricting the water flow with the smaller hose in the larger hose?
Would be concerned about heating the engine up.

The smaller hose is less restriction than a thermostat, so it is no problem. I used a smaller hose to hold my thermostat in position until I went to Menards and bought a 2" platic pipe barb fitting to use. I cut the barbs off and push it down the hose to lock the thermostat in place. No extra hose clamp is needed, so it still looks stock.

i was never a fan of putting anything in line that can clog and or restrict the flow of coolant while driving even if its a metal screen. the way i would flush it is after your done running your favorite treatment through the system(vinegar, cascade, coolant flush, exlax whatever flavor you like). back flush the radiator if desired, i then disconnect the hose from the upper radiator neck and make sure the stat (if applicablle)is removed also. install a fence pipe or similar into the hose and clamp tight. use a pipe thats long enough to extend over the front of vehicle past the bumper. open drain cock and put your garden hose into the fill neck to keep a constant flow of water going into the radiator while the car is running. the loosened crap will flow out of the pipe. if your system is real bad multiple flushes may be needed.

I just turned the radiator upside down full of water and more rust flakes came out, but no sign of the drier sock. I sure hope it dissolved.

Seems like it would have went in the radiator. If it is not in the top tank, it must have dissolved.

I wish I had one of those small inspection cameras to look in the top tank under the baffle. I flushed the engine with lots of water before I started this job, so the engine block should be very dry. I'm going to put a shop vac on the water outlet on the head, and use compressed air to blow towards the rear of the block through the inlet port. Hopefully I can get some more rust flakes out.

After what I've been through with this used engine, I wish I'd have just pulled the head when I first bought it, to check for rust buildup.

With a coupon you can frequently get these for 79.00, I paid 69.00 for mine, use it more than I ever thought I would.
