door locks

I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but that's where I'm at. First, is the keyed lock on the riders side? I'm looking at the door handles and can't figure out how the inside handle fits on. The hole in the inside handle is round and the shaft from out side has a squire end??? I hope some one can under stand what I am saying and cad answer these questions.

Yes, the only door locks with a key, are on the riders (passengers) side of the car. It would help if we knew the year and model of the Model A you are referring to.....

This is 1930 ccpu. It don't make a lot of sense that the lock would be on the passenger side, but what do I know. Thank Dwight

Re: door locks

Ford put the locking door on the passenger side (and a sliding inside lock on the driver's side) out of concern for safety. It was considered safer for the driver to open the passenger side door and reach across to open his/her door from the inside than it was to stand in traffic and try to open it. If the traffic was too close, he/she could just slide in rather than tempting fate on the driver's side. This according to a talk to our George Washington Chapter / MAFCA club by George DeAngelis on October 16, 2002.

Curb side safe side. Remember there were several years where the drivers side door didn't even open on the T's. Why on the early A's, the park brake was on the left hand side. So you could slide across the seat and exit the passenger door.

Re: door locks

There were not a lot of parking lots in Model A days, most parking was on the street. Watch the old movies from the '30s, you will see people getting in cars on the curb side and sliding over. Not so easy to do with the shift lever on the floor.
