T5 into a 54 F100 behind a 292?
 

I've been on the flathead side of the house up to now-I recently bought a 54 F100 with a nice stock 58 292 and 3 spd stick on the column. I'd like to swap to a T5 like I did in my 39 but don't know where to start. Is an adapter available to bolt up to the 292 bell? Will a 90-91 Must T5 shift stick come out under the bench seat? I've looked in the archives with zero results.

i have a friend that has a 53 on a bronco chassis with a 390 he has a mustang 5 spd trans i belive he put an s 10 tailshaft on to relocate the shifter foward also look into an s 10 5 spd i had one in my 55 merc i think it was out of a 92 adapters are available thru speedway and others i think there is a how to make your own on the late v8 site

John Mummert has everything to fix you up with a T-5 conversion along with almost anything else you LUST over for a Y-Block.

I have to tell you that putting the T-5 behind my 292 was one of the best upgrades I ever did on my truck. I had a friend weld an "ear" on the 292 bell housing and we put an S-10 tailstock in due to my bench seat. I followed a series of articles I found written by Doc Fromader (sic) for Classic Trucks magazine. Also had the help of a mechanic friend and the Ford Barn advice. The Mummert site was a great help as well. I love going through the gears and the much improved gas mileage. - John

Thanks all. I called Mummert's today and received alot of good info. I was hoping I wouldn't have to modify the bell but with a truck bell, there's no way around it. John - how close to the bench will the Mustang shifter be? Any chance you have photos of your mods to the bell? Mummert's wants $250 to do the mods plus shipping both ways - he's in San Diego and I'm in SC. Ken

I sure would like to see pictures of the completed operation. I have a 53 panel. Now I'm running separate seats as panels only had a standard driver seat anyway . Since the clutch attaches to that NO ACCOUNT Ford box , I'm stuck with changing everything out if I use anything besides a gear box 1953-56.

Guys,

I don't think I have pictures of the ear welded on, but look up those Doc Fromader articles. He had pictures and a lot of great info. I copied every article and put it all in a binder. Lent it to a guy and have not got it back. I just looked up the Mummert site and the bellhousing photo looks like mine does. The welding was fairly easy according to the friend who did it. I happen to live near a ship yard so there are lots of skilled welders around. My shifter spacing worked out great and I will post some photos of my homemade walnut shifter. You really need to do this, my 55 is getting better MPG than our other more modern vehicles. - John

Glad to help. And yes, w/o the S-10 tailstock it would be well under the seat. I saw a friend use a Mustang tail w/ bucket seats and it was quite a ways back. Since you have done this before, I'm sure you will do fine. I will try to get back my notebook from my project. I remember making up a pilot bearing and buying a clutch bracket from Mummert. Had to make a shorter drive shaft. My tranny is tuned so high w/ a 9" rear end that I travel at 70 + on the highway and I can hardly hear it running in 5th. Please keep you eyes open for some extra doors down south. I'll need to replace mine soon as they are bubbling badly at the bottoms. I'll be driving south to Fla this Fall and looking for doors down your way. - John
