Craig, I actually saw that and thought based on the heel that it looked like a regrind and so I passed. Maybe it isn't but that is what my initial glance was and I never took the time to research it more.

Possibly a good core or usable cam BUT, it is not NOS. If you look close at picture #4 you can see the wear on the gear teeth. You can also see the teeth thin slightly in the center. It also has grease on the shaft next to the lobes in several places. The bearings would not measure 1.60, they have to have some clearance.

I would like to have just the Box.

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

I don't see any signs of this not being NOS, but my NOS Model A cam has a thin coat of cosmoline, and I would think this cam would also have some.

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

Tom, it may very well be but to me it just did not have the "look". And, I honestly just briefly looked at it when I first saw the auction and made the decision to 'pass' but one other thing that I thought one usually finds with the NOS B cams was a copper clad. Again, maybe it is NOS but it just wasn't something that I felt I needed.

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

Some cams I've seen had the copper, but not all of them.
I do wonder about the staining the cam appears to have? Amost looks like it could have been stored in a damp location.

I'd sure like to have it or one like it, but not at that price.

Wouldn't a brand new Stipe cam be a better purchase? Just my thoughts on this....

One thing that may have been a problem was shipping only to Canada.

Better to let the bidders determine the price rather than scare them off with a ridiculous starting price.

That is "NOT" a RIDICULOUS price.. Brattons has a NEW one with a "B" cam lift to it for $435.00, go buy it instead..

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

Yes but Brattons is not used !! If it was a good buy it would have been snapped up very quickly. Instead of good buy it was good bye !Al

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

I don't believe that is a used cam.I had a couple NOS B cams I bought from the guy that used to do my babbit. He had aquired a bunch of them in the early to mid 60's.I think what looked to be wear on the drive gear is the picture. The more I look at it the more I think it really is not worn. Also, two things are the same as on mine. The machine markings on the face where the timing gear rides are very pronounced.I can see it on most, but nowhere near the degree of the new one.I have a pile of cams and just looking at the ends you can pick out the NOS one. Also,my NOS cams don't have the dowels installed, just like this one. They aren't easy to get out,and I don't know why anybody would bother.I have one left, and I wouldn't let it go for any $150.I looked into this one for somebody else, but it had to be shipped to Canada only.

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

That cam is copper plated.
That cam has water marks that some people might run but I sure wouldn't.
That cam has been in an engine and turned over several times. Not run though.
I can tell by pattern shading on some of the lobes.
The gear shows marking but nothing to be concerned about.
Who knows why they took the dowels back out. Maybe so they could sell it as new.
The reason I know all this is because I have been in the cam business for 60 years
and have seen many cams just like this.

Pete ;

Not to high jack the thread ,but why did they copper plate the B cam . I have a B engine and my cam looks like it is copper plated .
Thanks

Re: NOS B cam on Ebay

Not copper plated, it is carborized (sp). I don't know what the process is but Bill Stipe does it to his cams and it turns them copper color. I have about 10 or 15 B cams and about half are plain and half are carborized.

The cam in discussion is copper plated BETWEEN the lobes and everywhere it is not machined.
This is to keep those areas from being carburized when the rest of the cam is.
Not all Ford cams were carburized. Some were induction heat treated. These are not copper plated because the induction heating process is localized over the lobes and journals only.
Each method works equally well.
Induction heat treating is usually used more for high production because the process is much faster but the equipment is more expensive.
