Alaskan A's

Saturday, April 20th, our first outing of the season. Met at Garcias in Eagle River for lunch and then a drive thru the countryside up to Peters Creek. 11 cars and about 20 people for a fun day. My rig is second from the left in the picture.

I used to be stationed at Ft Richardson in the late 80's. Looks like breakup is well underway. Looks like a great turnout and some nice looking A's!

It looks more hospitable than where Tom lives

That sure brings back lots of memories. I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB from 1969-1971 and absolutely loved my stay there....wonderful country and people. Looks like you have a nice Model A group!

That is a gal with a skirt, but she does have a jacket on, and is wearing boots. It's almost T-shirt weather, it was about 45 degrees when that picture was taken.

When you do come up, we will treat you so many different ways, you are bound to like some of them!

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Some pictures of our AAMA Spring Shakedown Tour -- Anchorage to Homer (225 miles one way) Left Anchorage at 10am this morning. Snowed on us for about the first 50 or so miles. 7 Model A's, & 3 other cars including a '41 Caddy Coupe, & a '38 Chrysler.

Awesome photos! Count me in as a guy who would love to drive my A in the snow, on gravel, and cross country! I'd love to bring it to as near perfection as reasonably possible but still have the guts to take it out and drive it, rock chips , dirt and snow be damned! IMHO its a much better way to enjoy the hobby than take your coffee to the garage and admire a perfectly polished car and let it sit there, only to be seen by the owner, in a dust free hermetically sealed garage/lounge. Good job! Keep the photos coming!

This picture was found on Facebook, taken on our way back from Homer on this past Tuesday. Can't stop for very long without gathering a crowd.

I'm not sure anybody on that trip had an actual 'hot water heater,' mostly just manifold heaters. But I sure did like the job Ted did on his Model A 'homemade' windshield defroster! Not sure Colleen on the passenger side could see much past the improvised ductwork!

But it seemed to have done the job while we were climbing Turnagain Pass in the snow and frozen rain.

My wiper froze to the windshield and I had to stop and clear the ice off the glass several times .

Fun trip!

One of the cars on the trip had BOTH a hot water heater and a manifold heater. He used the manifold heater with a hose fashioned somewhat like the picture in Arthur's post above. The water heater for the rest of the car. There are several other water heaters in our club, and as far as I know they work ok. I have one I am planning on putting in my pickup, especially after making this trip without a heater of any kind. Mandate from my wife before she takes another trip with me.

Carl, is that a '38 Chrysler "ROYAL"? My Uncle, "Pappy" had a Black one, with Red wheels & that DUDE would run 120 MPH, sooooo smooth & easy! Must have had a 2.04 to 1 differential! Bill W.

Re: Alaskan A's

A trick I learned from the MARC news back in the early 60's, was to place a pencil under the back edge of the hood top. It helped defrost the windshield. I also used a trico vacuum fan. Drove my 30 tudor every day to collage, and work. One time, I drove through 12" off snow, by wraping 1" rope through the spokes and around the tires. Now if the temp is below 65 degrees, I stay in the house.

Yes, it is a '38 Chrysler. Not sure if it's a "Royal", I'll have to find out. He does own a Model A Roadster, just a little too cold for an open car on this trip.

Chief had 2 window anti-fogging tricks. Rub inside of glass with 1/2 a cut onion & the other was to rub the damp glass with a bag of Bull Durham tobacco, with the label ripped off. Bill W.
