New/Old Huckster body home at last ! 11 Attachment(s)
It's now official ! The chassis project is now a Huckster ! Made the 16 hour round trip "to New Jersey to pick up a body". (I love saying that.) A buddy and I made the trip this Saturday and brought home a beautiful unfinished Schurmeier Whitney Express project body I have purchased from a fellow barner. It was a very enjoyable trip , NJ is often mistreated but we found it much more civilized than where we come from ! Everyone was pleasant and courteous and the seller was a great guy. Thanks Mark !
Anyhow, got it home safely and had it temporarily mounted on my chassis project and it looks great ! I am very pleased with the craftsmanship. Just look at that top ! ( It's my favorite part of the whole body). Lots to figure out and I hope to keep posting progress if anyone is interested, but today, I am one very excited barner !:D |
Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! Very nice. Most padding and top fabric is white under the top material, so I would recommend a layer of black fabric be put down first before the padding and top fabric. That way you will not see white between the ceiling boards.

Looks like it was nicely built, i thought about getting it a couple of months ago, but i knew if i brought one more home, my wife would leave me. Glad to see it will get put back together, great purchase!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! If you can locate a late 31 commercial cowl, the body would bolt right up to it, no rabbeting of the front of the body

Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! Steve...I was considering rabbeting the front to fit against the cowl I have. It is a truck cowl as it has the steel cowl band and the fit looks to be very tight. I'm not familiar with the commercial cowl. What does it look like? Thanks for the encouragement , guys. It almost makes up for my wife making me sleep in the garage !( just kidding) I will actually be sleeping in my truck ! AT CARLISLE !

Just an update on my huckster project. For those of you who have forgotten, this is a running chassis I bought on ebay combined with a wooden bed I bought from a fellow barner. It is a replica/restoration of a body made by Schurmier Whitney for a 28 A. I have decided to adapt this excellant bed into one of my dreams, a 31 Huckster/screenside delivery. I bought a cowl in Meyersdale, PA, a door at Carlisle, another door at Renningers, and misc. parts from all over, including some door parts and hinges from a barner in Washington state.
The doors are Briggs fordoor, which is just the proportion for what I wanted to achieve. I replaced the bottom wood and blasted the doors. They came out fantastic! Then I started the imposing job of marrying these parts together. I want it to look Semi Factory and cause guys to scratch their heads wondering why they have never seen a huckster with metal model A doors. Lots of work left, but I am enjoying every minute and can start to see the results .:) |

Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! Come on Linn its been almost three months!! ;) Looks good with the metal doors. You have more wood skills than I do, I didn't want to get into the woodwork of making it work with a 30/31 cowl and the 28/29 was too narrow. Seems like you have it figured out. So did you use the wood doors for kindling?
Does it give you more room than the wood doors looks like there is a little more shoulder room? Or did you trim the floor? That was always my conundrum when trying to find the cowl that would fit. |

Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! Yeah...mjw...I'm draggin my feet on this one ! It took some figgerin, but I got it to all work out. I just didn't care for those tall Schurmeyer Whitney doors. I always had pictured this project with standard A doors, the lines all must flow...So I bought two different Briggs Fordoor doors ( they were exactly the right width) and replaced the wood in them. They fit right up to the 31 truck cowl I had bought. I trimmed the wooden floor/frame to match the curvature of the door. This of course kicked the doors out to the stock 31 width at the rear and I had to make up the difference. I am using all of the scraps you threw in with the deal and it is coming together perfectly. Now I am on to the sheet metal skin that goes from the doors back. I intend to leave the bed exposed wood, only "sticked" woody-style. And yes, it added a lot to the shoulder room....Oh, I also chopped it about 5 inches to make it more proportionaly flowing. My apologies to Mr. Schurmier and Mr. Whitney. (I plan on taking the doors to Hershey.) Thanks for the encouragement, guys.

Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! I just finished a 2 door woodie body, maple and birch plywood, looks like a 28/29 model 150, commercial cowl. Don't know which way to go with it so may sell it or the whole project. Have the complete chassis with march of 29 title. Would put pic's on here, but cannot seem to upload to here. Anyone interested email works for me

That's exactly what I did. I made a solid header the exact size needed to lower it and cut the side and rear posts. I think it really helped the proportions and solve that big space above the metal doors. Thanks for the kind words. |
Re: New/Old Huckster body home at last ! Between this thread and the one about the "1927 Mercury" posted recently, I cannot help but feel inadequate in so many ways... The workmanship is excellent and I am anxious to see the finisned huckster. You should be proud of yourself. Well done. I am curious to the final color scheme... have you decided?
