Camshaft Question
 

Building another 312 that is pretty much stock.

Thinking about having the stock camshaft reground BUT with higher lift on intake and exhaust.

Can go as hi as .300 lift before having to worry about things running into each other.

What do you guys think of this approach?

Not interested in anything except this arrangement (such as who has what and other vendor cams as suggestions)

What you are looking for is a stock cam for a 312 57 T-bird. Part number is EDB.

Higher lift on a stock camshaft can be accomplished with the hi-ratio ECG rocker arms original to '56 and '57.

I’d talk to John Mummert. He knows pretty much what everything was, and he’s done a couple custom grinds for me. He shows a “stock” cam, noted as “not 1957 camshaft”, and it’s 385 at the valve, probably with the 1:54 rockers. I’ve had 4 of his camshafts, quality, oil groove, all that stuff was good.

Now if what you mean is you want to keep the original core, I don’t know how much you can take the base circle down to increase the lift. But John would know, and probably Ted Eaton or Tim McMasters.

.300" lobe lift would be about the same as the old Isky RPM300 cam, but it had about 270 degrees of advertised duration. Quite a bit more duration than a stock '57 312 cam.
I had an RPM300 in my '55 Mercury when a kid. Definately more power. Not really a lopey idle, but sounded better than than stock. I bought mine off the shelf at the original Gratiot Auto Supply in Detroit for $35 including the lifters in 1967. I imagine you would have to multiply that amount by at least 10 today.
