59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Can someone please give me the size(s)/length/NC or NF/lock washer or not for the water pumps on a 59A flathead.
Thanks.:) |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? I believe they are 3/8" course threads with lock washers. The Ford parts manual has the correct lengths. If I recall they are 7/8" which is an odd size. 1" is a standard size BUT longer bolts could bottom out and not pull the pump up tight against the gasket. Use grease on both sides of the gaskets not silicon or gasket sealant. G.M.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Yes, thank you. I just found out. 3/8 x 1 1/4" NC and use a stainless bolt/washer for the bottom hole.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? 1-1/4 bolts might be a little long, you don't need more than 3/8 to 7/16 thread sticking out. Those holes are dead holes and you don't want the bolts to bottom out. Walt

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Thanks Walt. The outside boss on these pumps is thicker which requires a little longer bolt and not forgetting the lock washer.
I'll test them first before final lockdown. |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? I use 1 inch for the bottom two and 1 1/4 for the top two. No problems with them bottoming out. Ed

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Be sure and apply anti-seize compund to ALL the water pump bolts and don not overtighten them. 25 foot pound will be fine. That's what I have for the 8BA water pump bolts.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Yes, looks like the 1" and 1 1/4" are going to do the trick.
Yes, I knew about the anti seize...thanks. Will the grease instead of RTV reak down the gasket eventually? |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? No the grease keeps the gasket from getting hard, sticking to the pumps and can be removed and reused if nessesary. Clean the old gasket off. G.M.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Cool trick....thanks.
Yup, cleaned all the old stuff off yesterday. |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? SS bolts are a good idea, esspecially for the bolt in the water inlet. I struggled with a bolt that the head was almost rust away. Had to use one of those sockets that grip on the flats[made for rounded off corners ]
|
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Use 6 point sockets on the bolts and double check to make sure the lock washer don't drop off the bolt that's in the pump inlet. If dropped it will get picked up and jamb the impeller. One guy got one jambed and the pulley came loose. G.M.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? I just made a 1/4 thick plate to cover the water pump hole so I could pressure test cracked block. I greased the gasket real good on both sides when I removed the plate it fell right off and the gasket was perfect. Walt

Tomorrow I must assembly water pumps, as i rebuilt my 59AB and I read this interesting post. What the best product to put in both size of the gasket? grease or silicone? I have new water pump gaskets Thank you Hary |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Just grease both sides of the gasket.Dont use silicone as it may plug the small hole in pump that allows oil to drain down from valve chamber & lubricate pump bushing.

Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Hello every body!
I Have installed a refurbished water pump in a 59ab with four stainlet steel fasteners but they seems to loose and the lock washers (grover ones) became flat. I think that stainlet steel are not hard stress fasteners. Another question: When you install a refurbished water pump is it necesary to run the engine with out water for a little 2 minutes in order to seat the seal? Thanks!! Gustavo from Argentina |
Re: 59A Flathead Water Pump Bolt Size? Does any one use anti-seize paste on the outlet bolt
