Trunk lid gap

I have repaired badly damaged and rusted trunk hinge support areas on my 1930 coupe. I am getting ready to install hinges and would like to ask someone for the size of the gap between the top of the trunk and the body. I am not concerned about the sides or bottom gaps because I will be rebuilding those areas and can adjust as I proceed.

So if you have a well fitting trunk lid on your coupe and can give me the top gap size when the trunk is closed I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you,

Tony

On My 28 coupe, which has the same size lid, there is about an 1/8" gap. You don't want to make it much less or the lid might bind up when it is opened and ship the paint. Don't ask me how I know this.

Rusty, thanks for the reply and information. I know that many body shops shoot for a 3/16" gap on doors and fenders before paint. It's good to know that a finished 1/8" gap will clear the body when the lid is opened.

Re: Trunk lid gap

Mine is 3/16”. There is a bit of an arch in the lid which will push the front edge of the trunk toward the adjacent sheet metal panel when the lid is lifted. I did a lot of adjusting the gap, moving the hinge point up-down and forward-back to keep the top edge of the trunk from rubbing. Mine was a rumble to trunk conversion, so welding affected the arch of the lid a bit. Making sure you have plenty of clearance for paint thickness when opening and closing the lid is more important than a specific gap, in my opinion. But 3/16” is where mine ended up after paint and final assembly.

Thank you very much Russ B, I'll keep your advice in mind as I fit mine.
