1941 Ford trunk tool compartment

The tool compartment in my '41 trunk has wooden covers. Are those original and if so how are they finished? Painted, varnished (?)

Mine were maroon I think. Kind of color blind in that area of colors.

Mine were painted black, but it's an older restoration, so......

The wood tool compartment covers in my '39 coupe has a brownish stain wood preservative. The wood grain shows through. Not '41, but the finish may have been the same. Ford didn't get too fancy in the trunk area back then.

Thanks, Guys. Looks like it's my choice. Mine are black so I will refinish them.

Originally they were dipped in a mixture of old paints and oils. The result was a dull blackish color.

I have used a black stain on the new plywood from Min-Wax. As it soaks into the wood it gives a dull finish.

I'll look for Min-Wax. Sounds like the way to go. Thanks TJ and Kube.

Joe, you should be able to buy it in a pint can and you will still have plenty left over.
