Local Estate Auction 1935 Roadster Sells for $53,925.00
 

I went and previewed this car a couple weeks ago. History of car was that this 35 Roadster was wrecked shortly after it was purchased new. Owner didn't want a wrecked car. This guys Grandfather (who owned a body shop) bought the car and it sat in his shop for 6 years until his oldest son was in high school. When he was old enough to drive, they pieced it back together, and he and his sisters drove the car to school for several years. They liked the 36 frontend better than the 35 so it changed when the car was frame off restored in the 80's. Car was driven very little after that, and it showed. The restoration was done very well. This was a nice car that needed tires and a good cleaning. There was some looseness in the lower hinge on the drivers door and a few paint defects. I was truly amazed at the selling price. Car was recently appraised at $35,000.00. A couple guys must have really wanted this car.

Thanks for the update on this auction. I wondered how it would sell being a hybrid of '35 and '36.

Although it looks to be a very nice car, the fact that it is sorta a "Heinz 57" version goes against everything I have been hearing and reading about the pricing of these these cars.

That is a pretty high price . . . though there are not that many 35/36 roadsters out there.

I was watching the RM Auburn Indiana sale live Friday, Glen Hague Collection, and I thought that some of the car prices were soft. '40 Ford Coupes they were struggling to get $7000- $9000 dollars. A '40 Ford Convt. looked pretty nice, I think went for $14K.

Earlier they sold Model A's that really weren't bringing a lot of money. They all needed to be restored . '30 Roadster they advertised as a '29 sold at something like $7,000 or there abouts.

Yeah, some of those prices do seem low even for cars than need some finishing or TLC.

Prices for Woodies have fallen very steeply in the past couple of years. Wagons that sold for near $100K, can be had for $30-40K if so inclined.

I stand corrected on the Coupes I commented on, they brought a bit more than I recalled!

30 year rule.... Today's collector car buyer with real bucks wants a twin turbo toyota supra.... Now that's some old skool stuff. 50 year old bank president wanted one in HS, but no way it was gonna happen. Now he has big bucks....He doesn't lust after 95 hp and mechanical brakes. Being 50 might be ok on some levels, but I'll be in the just short of 70 league thanks...

I agree completely, but some just don't "get" the 30 or whatever rule. Each generation has their own unique "wish I had one of those" lists and it is ever moving forward. Sure, there are exceptions, but that's what they are, exceptions.

I don't have, collect,restore old fords for the money or an investment. I just like them and have a personal junkyard of them on my adjoining 5 acres. I rarely have to buy parts.... BUT I could not agree more on Tubman's list of the Big 3 that I see on the road today. I live on an island on the west coast, BIG tourist destination for upscale young vacationers. Seems every other vehicle getting off the ferry is a vanagon (preferebly a 4wd synchro), a square body chev with a camper or an fj 60 landcruiser wagon. All of them have a stack of mountain bikes on the tail and a couple of kayaks or stand up surfboards (why???) on the roof. Now I'm rambling, but I just had to comment on Tubman's astute observation on his 3 picks.

VW vans have started their decline as well since that market demographic is starting to age out. 10 years ago, these VW were selling for Woodie prices. $100-150K was not uncommon.

They've cooled off some, but not as much as Ford Woodies. I really believe that when Martha Stewart had an episode of her show featuring her tailgating with a Woodie, the prices spiked because all of those wealthy housewives wanted to be like Martha.

Well, that lasted like most fashion trends.

At some point common sense will bring Boomers and Millenials back to cars of the 30s and 40s, if only for their relative value when compared to what is currently trading on BaT and Hemmings.

PS - to underscore Tim’s point, 1936 woodie picture in my avatar was bought for $48,000…which may have been a tad too much, but the paint is gorgeous and restoration not “overdone”. Seller provided $135,000 in receipts.
