Re: pressure brake light switch

I've read that the Harley dealership will have a more modern switch that interchanges. Someone here will know the specifics.

Re: pressure brake light switch

TBird suppliers (like Casco or Hills) offer a kit that replaces the pressure switch with a mechanical one. It operates off the brake pedal arm.

Sometimes, dot 5 (silicone) will cause the switch to malfunction.
But the switches can malfuntion for other reasons too.

i would put in a mechanical switch for more reliability.

Re: pressure brake light switch

Don't buy anymore of those cheap chinese made brakelight switches. They are guaranteed to fail in short order. Both the seal inside and contacts are substandard. The cheat on everything.
I got a brakelight switch for my '55 from a motorcycle performance shop. It is set up to accept Dot 5 fluid, but I suppose you could still use Dot 3. It's been in there for years now and I get a lot of use out of it. You will need to do wiring terminal modifications to use the motorcycle switch, but it is the right pipe thread size and looks the same as the Dot 3 switch, except for the wiring.

On my 54, I made a bracket that mounted on the firewall brace that the brake and clutch pedal are mounted to and installed a mechanical switch off ebay. Has worked great for the last 8 or 9 years. I have a write up on it if interested.

The Harley switch is the way to go. Mine has been in for nearly 15 years now with no sign of failure.

Re: pressure brake light switch

Painless Wiring makes one I've seen people use, it trips at low pressure. The one that came with my distribution block leaked immediately. The one from NAPA started out okay, but quickly took a lot of pressure for it to work. I now buy one on eBay that works fine, probably have 9000 miles on it. I carry a spare as well.
