Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Looks like there is a few different pieces of weatherstripping for the doors. A top and a bottom. Any thing else? What about the vertical rear part of the door?
On the top piece-does it go from the top hinge to the top left corner of the door? What about the vertical part on the back end of the door? The rubber I have looks pretty self explanatory for the top (the rubber is kind of L shaped and tucks into the channel) but where does it end on the rear of the door? The bottom piece…I have no idea how this installs. Any help? I’ll post photos of what I have later tonight. Looking forward to getting rid of some of my rattles! |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Here's a very informative thread about door seals. "Kube" mentions that 1939 door seals mount a little differently than 1940.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe There is also a piece that goes on the front part of the door around the hinges.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Only thing sealing the rear edge is the upholstery welting.

There is a front door seal as TJ had mentioned. That piece is quite self-explanatory. The bottom seal is actually fastened to the floor with screws. If you purchase reproduction sills, I suggest you get the ones offered with the stainless and rubber as a unit. You will need to trim the rubber a bit to gain proper length. The sill plates have slots so they can be adjusted inward / outward as necessary to make a good seal against the door. When you receive the repro sills, roll the rubber over the sill and bind it in that position for a month or two. That will create a memory to the rubber and it will then fit so much better upon installation. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Thanks yall. So is weatherstripping glue used on the top seal and front hinge seal?

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I stepped up and bought the one piece door seals now offered by Drake. At $225 I may have been suckered? After taking my 40 to town this morning with it's wind noise I will take the time to install the Drake seals and report back. Package isn't very big so we'll see?

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Yep, I’ve always used the 3M black weather ship adhesive. I love that stuff. I did not know that one piece door seal existed. I will check that out. Please let me know how you like it. It certainly is a little pricey. But anything to get the noise down so my kids will actually ride in the car is helpful.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe My sad experience with the '40 hinge seal packaged and distributed by Vintique:
The seal is about 24" long but was stuffed into a plastic sleeve package about 18" long. Rubber looked like a snake and had taken a set. Couldn't install it. Hung the two rubbers from the garage rafters for a year. Never did relax. They went in the trash. My car is still missing those seals. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Jay, I wonder if Dennis Carpenter's product is better?

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I ordered the drake one piece seals as well as the lower seal with stainless already attached. I only have one of the old stainless pieces so figured that was the way to go. Thanks yall!

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I'm trying to picture how a one-piece seal would work.
Originally, one seal was glued to the body and the other seal to the door. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe 7 Attachment(s)
"Kube" p[oses a good question. A one piece seal would have to be attached to the surface of the A-pillar and would easily be distorted yielding a poor fit. (I think.) Not a good idea.
Perhaps this might be helpful. Here's the DRAKE door seals. One goes on door from bottom of door hinge to door bottom. The other follows the contour of the door and goes from the top of the door hinge and on the contour of the body. Bottom door seal also shown.(Floor pan bolt in last photo is not stock.) |

"I believe ours is made by uss..." Not totally reassuring, but I will take a chance and order from Carpenter. Thanks for the suggestion. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Got the one piece seal in the mail. Does it attach to the door or the body?
