Tech tip 1940-48 transmission shifter arm repair The last few weeks weve had a few rebuilds on 40/48 shifter housings. The shifter arm pins are nearly always worn. Rather than replacing with diminishing NOS arms, weve been repairing them for years, and thought Id share as its simple. The below two photos show the common wear.

And you are done! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c51e4d7b31.jpg We sell the replacement pins (see link below). I have gotten to where I replace them all as even compared to a NOS arm these pins fit the Clevis better for less shifter lever free play.. hope this helps someone save some $$ on a un-needed nos parts purchase. https://thirdgenauto.com/product/194...m-repair-pins/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Tech tip 1940-48 transmission shifter arm repair What am I missing here? If you drive out the old shaft isn't the hole the correct size? Why do you have to drill it out?
Just curious John |
Re: Tech tip 1940-48 transmission shifter arm repair The original pins are stepped down to act as a stop when installed at the factory... as in the originals are smaller in the portion that sits in the arm

Re: Tech tip 1940-48 transmission shifter arm repair 3 Attachment(s)
An additional idea (to the above tip) is to replace the stock pins that attach shifter arms to transmission side cover with fine threaded nuts and bolts after you replace the seals.
Can be done with the transmission in the car. Clutch arm also. Still working great 20 years later. Zero play as all components are threaded. No pin peening required. |
Re: Tech tip 1940-48 transmission shifter arm repair Nice job, Michael. I wondered about the drilling, now you've explained it, it all makes sense.
