Good sounding single muffler
 

Have a original type muffler(single) now and might want to give it a little rumble,what would you use,,,??

Some original type mufflers are straight thru and some are offset with baffles.
Which do you have?

I love a gutted muffler on the flathead. Nice melodic ring to it.

I tried a single Smitty, both on my 47, and on my 34. Obviously opinion, sounded ok to me.

Don, have you blocked off the heat risers...those two holes in the block under the carb?


Not sure how that changes the sound with single exhaust, but with duals, I love the sound..... including the "rap" that comes through my Smithys!

Had a 36 backin1950 with HR blocked and a flex pipe all the way back,must have sounded good !cant remember!!!!Dont know if present muffler has baffles ,,,smithies have a good reputation,,,,I can go to cruise ins and people are amazied at how quiet the 35 is,cant hear it go by,they think I’m coasting,,,thinking’s would just like to have a little rumble!!

I use Porters 16 inch. They have a nice rumble and are well made.

Smiths rotted out on my 39 in just 2 years . I thought I was running it long enough to dry up the condensation . On my 47 they are still good after 15 years . It makes you wonder where are they made now .

You could always take the muffler out and run a straight pipe all the way back, ain’t nothin like flathead music!

I had a similar experience with Smithys rusting out after a few years. I installed a pair of Brockman mellowtones as replacements probably 10 years ago and they have held up great. I believe I did steel packed with 18 inch bodies. They also have fiberglass packing for a little mellower sound and longer bodies available. Ken

My buddy owns a string of Midas shops. I had his guys install the Fenton headers, pipes, and mufflers on my '51 in 1987. They used some generic "Steel-Paks" and they sounded great then and they sound great now. When I installed the new engine 3 years ago, an inspection of the exhaust system showed it to be in excellent shape. I'd ask him what they used, but I'll bet he didn't know the specifics then and I'm sure he doesn't now.

I guess all I'm saying is that I wouldn't be considering anything that rusts out that quickly.

I have 4 cars with the same Porter's mufflers, all dual's and they all sound different--two '36's with LB flatheads, a '55 Tbird with 292 and a '67 Mustang with 351w. The '36's are really different, considering the same engine, I conclude it's the difference in the cams that make the difference in sound. Bottom line.............what you hear that you like on someone else's car, may (probably) not sound the same on your car.

Stainless Porter's on mine; sounds good and should last a long time.

Single straight pipe right to the rear bumper on the 52 Merc works for me. Not real loud unless my foot gets to heavy on the gas pedal. At idle you can hardly tell its running.

Think I’ll check out the porters,then find a good buddy that has a lift,,
A good project for someone would be to make recordings of the different muffler sounds and put it on u tube!,

Any 2”to 2 1/2” open pipe or tube . I use chain link fence posts for duals . Its not loud . It just rumbles on down shifting.

I'm running Brockman's 2" X 12" and they are LOUD!! Just the way I like it. They come out under the running boards just in front of the rear wheels so I can really hear em.

I’ve managed to get this 2 1/2” stainless single system into position. Sounds great. The muffler is a straight through magnaflow and the offset as per original. Remember this is Rhd so the exhaust is on the other side of the frame.
