How to original Radius Ball Cap
 

Guys I am scratching together original radius ball cap parts. Trying experiment not using rubber ball. Have I got the right parts ? Part number 1 & 4 make the best pair fitting in the bellhousing (pic 1 & 2)- Part number 3 has no hope of fitting bellhousing unless modified (pic 3)- is this correct ?. Also when you put them together around the ball there is a gap - the ball diameter is greater than the combined shallows of the caps so problem is the caps do not sit face to face (pic 4) . Am I missing something please ?

I think the ball being bigger than the sum of the two cups is correct. I think you are missing the springs, which go on the bolts before the nuts, and keep tension on the cups, trapping the ball.

I may be wrong, it has been a long time since I messed with them.

parts 1 and 2 are for the rubber ball. Part 3 is the correct top . Part 4 is the correct lower cap. It looks from the pic that 5 and 6 are also original lower caps, but the pic is too dark for me to say that with certainty. When the ball is the correct 1 1/2 inch, there will be about a 1/8th inch gap or a bit less between the two cups. There should also be two sleeves that fit over the studs and rest against the top cap, fitting within the holes of the lower cap. Two springs should rest between the lower side of the tabs of the lower cap and the special large nuts. The nuts must be cottered.

now what gets me is the fit of part 3 to the trans. I am wondering if you have a 32 tranny in there?

Thanks guys, great help. Sorry but I am not convinced yet that 1 & 2 are rubber ball - I thought these were cast iron and completely enclosed the ball, but I could be wrong. No it's not a 32 bellhousing - it is a 29 single plate for sure. The 1/8" gap is making sense except it leaves the ball quite exposed to the elements methinks. I am confident to try it out on the car now thanks

The gap between the caps is great and means the ball is not too worn. Pack the pocket well with grease. I like Mystik JT-6 High Temp grease.

drawing on page 20 in Bratton's catalog shows the correct sequence of assembly.

the rubber ball only goes with the inferior quality cast caps, which WILL break.

stick with the stamped steel original type caps and put the cupped washer in as a temporary fix if the ball is worn, then replace the wishbone or repair the ball as soon as possible.....

Originals had a hole in the top for lubrication coming down from the flywheel cover (rear main leak).
