Did I croak this coil?

I bought a new coil (helmet) for my yet to be started 39 engine. I had no power thru ignition circut so I ran a jumper wire from batt. to coil. Got engine running and ran for about 15 min. while I adj. carb. Next day installed spare resistor on coil and ran for 5 min. and coil died. Installed old coil and running again. Did I kill coil or should they be able to handle 6 volts while idling for 15 min. Got coil off eBay and it was from Carpenter and made in China. Mark

some more junk from china. if you have the old coil send it to skip haney in fla and have it rebuilt--you will not regret it

I could see that being hard on points but I would think the coil should have held up to it. But apparently not...

The coils offered by Carpenter, made in China, were known to be problematic early on. Not sure if that problem was ever corrected, nor if they still sell these coils.

If its a carpenter coil trash it return it.. They all fail...
Carpenter makes excellent products and has been a supporter and asset to this hobby.... but their coils are the one item they sell that is a serious failure.

i had a bad feeling when my orriginal coil screws would not work, needed longer ones. the original coil nut would not fit as threads are metric. i cant return it as i bought it off ebay several months ago. i will use it for target practice. mark

Re: Did I croak this coil?

Bought a 1940 coil at a swap meet for $10. then I sent it to Skip for a rebuild, this replaced the remote coil kit someone put on the car before I bought it. No regrets.
