Gulf tire co. tires 2 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know the history of the Gulf tire & supply co.The tire is called Gulf traffic on the sidewall. I was wondering how old the tires might be just picked up a pair for 21" rims

Re: Gulf tire co. tires I suspect very old. Gulf service stations sold tires like many other gas stations back when there were quite a number of Model As on the road. I would guess they are circa 1960s at least. There are probably others with more information than I have, but that is my opinion, worth what you paid for it.

Re: Gulf tire co. tires Gulf Oil service stations sold branded tires & batteries. Standard oil stations sold Atlas branded tires & batteries. Kelly Springfield would make tires for all of the branded companies under contract. Others may have too. I went on a tour through the plant in Tyler TX when I was a lot younger and they had all sorts of brand name tires being manufactured. One of my Cousins worked there at the time. I remember them selling this stuff up into the late 1970s but it sort of petered out after the decline & buy outs these oil companies went through.
I remember when Standard oil changed its corporate name to Amoco in the mid 80s and Gulf oil went through it's own problems all after the oil embargo of 1973 started to break these companies down. Gulf merged with Standard Oil of California and rebranded both as Chevron. There aren't too many full service stations these days. |

Re: Gulf tire co. tires BP was at least seriously considering going back to the AMOCO name due to what happened in the Gulf but I don't know if they have yet or not.
