drive shaft diameter question
 

i am disassembling a rear end assembly. i was going to pull the drive shaft out through the side of the banjo but driveshaft diameter will not allow the pinion bearing nuts to slide off. i am going to have to pull the pinion and driveshaft out through the front of the banjo. should not be a problem.

question. other than ratio, are all the pinions the same no matter what diameter the drive shaft is?

i am hoping this ring and pinion set will fit mine.

The pinion bearing lock nuts should be way larger than the drive shaft. If yours are not, I'd like to see a picture. The small drive shaft from the Mitchell O/D is much larger than the original one and I have no trouble getting the nuts off over that.

Is this an early 32 rear end? They have a larger diameter drive shaft.

Early model A axles had a different drive shaft and pinion which had threads for the adjusting nuts on the drive shaft. Later shafts have the longer pinion with the bearing nut threads as part of the pinion. The model B shaft is a tubular type set up so it's a fair amount larger. this treads onto the driveshaft.

i guess that means there are two different types of pinions ?

Looks like the early pinion and driveshaft. Does your center section have no reinforcing ribs either?

Your photo shows an early 1928 differential. The threads are on the drive shaft, not the pinion sleeve. See the link for an explanation. The set up is not compatible with the later configurations. You will need a pinion puller tool to get it apart. The early 1928 370 ring & pinions are not available from the suppliers. You can easily convert it to the later by obtaining a later drive shaft, there are plenty around due to all the Mitchell overdrive installs. You will also need the larger nuts, lock washer, and thrust washer. The suppliers have them. Everything else is the same. The comment about reinforcing support gussets refers to the banjo. The one on the 28's did not have a support casting around the torque tube flange and they are prone to cracking. The later ones have the support.

there is not support ribs on the banjo yoke.

i have a spare rear end that is the same set up, i really don't need any parts as long as i stay with the same ratio. the ratio in there divides down to 3.77-1 and it would be nice to have a faster ratio but that can wait until i win the loto.
