Sea-Foam
 

Just asking, if anybody runs a dose of Sea-Foam in their crank case occasionally to eliminate the accumulation of any sludge? I watched some clips where they did some tests doing this on a more modern engine and the results were pretty impressive. Thanks

I have in the modern used cars I’ve bought. Never in an A though. I always had good results with it though.

I've used it for over 40 yrs in the fuel. Never have put it oil.

I thinkin if you run modern detergent oil you shouldn't have to worry about sludge

I have only ever used Sea Foam in my fuel tank, But, I started looking around on the web and found a lot of info from Sea Foam on use in the oil pan! I share it here, not as an endorsement for Model A's use, but for information to make a decision! Same here, cleaned out a restricted oil pump screen on my 86 F150. The can does say you can use it in the oil. :)

I run four ounces of Marvel mystery oil per each ten gallons of gas . I have sometimes added a bit of marvel oil to the crankcase with no problem . I run 20 W 50 detergent oil in my model A engines with good results .

I use Marvels in my "A's" gas but have never put in the crankcase. My thinking is that MMO is more of a solvent, and I don't know if I want to add a solvent to my oil. Correct me if I'm wrong.

youtube has video on seafoam, I have been using it for years in a 1999 sl500 mercedes,2004 chevy blazer,1959 allis backhoe,1930 model a only in fuel. Works great for keeping fuel system clean

I have placed SeaFoam in my A crankcase before. Mostly when I first change the oil. A couple of ounces is all. I use it and also MMO in my fuel too, whichever is on sale. Car seems to start & idle better.

Correct. The only times I've used it in the crankcase is the first couple oil changes after I bought a high mileage used car. I figure it's good practice in case the previous owner didn't keep up on oil changes.



I changed a valve cover gasket on my Jeep at 215,000 and the top end looked new, no sludge, not even any varnish. Was it the seafoam? Maybe, maybe not but it sure didn't hurt anything.

Same here. MMO is a high detergent oil won't hurt to run a dab thru your motor oil even soon before you change oil if your engine isn't too gunked up. Otherwise I wouldn't it may kick loose a bunch of crap that clogs up places you don't want clogged up:)

My engine is clean inside . The times that I added Marvel to the crankcase was to help relieve sticky new stainless steel valves in new valve guides . It has been said that new stainless steel valves can get sticky . The Marvel oil worked and I didn't have to use it all the time in the crankcase . I think that the last time that I took the time to read the label , it was also recommended for use in the crankcase in measured amounts .

Other than a few people I know who are on this forum, nobody here has heard of Seafoam (MMO either). How much do they cost? Are they flammable? That would affect the cost to import some dramatically. I'm doubtful the cost and effort would be worthwhile.

The MSDS for Seafoam doesn't tell much but it is some blend of hydrocarbons. Usually runs about $5-$10 for a pint bottle.



MMO I think is mostly naptha with eleven secret herbs and spices and some wintergreen oil mixed in. Usually runs about $4-$7 for a quart. Both are very flammable obviously.

I think Sea-Foam is also naptha but without the secret herbs and spices. :D

I use 4 ounces of MMO to each 10 gallons of good gas without the corn crap, and it really does help.


I'm also a believer in SEA FOAM as it freed up stuck hydraulic lifters in an Olds. I poured a can in the oil, and within 5 miles the engine was quiet.
