Talking Winfield.....
 

Recently went to Grand National Roadster Show.
Met with Kem Robertson.
If you have seen F.A.S.T. magazine, you would recognize this mans' name...as the fellow who has done extensive write-up on Winfield history.
BTW, F.A.S.T. just put out LAST issue. After 25 years, this contributor to Model A/B engine knowledge / use...is gone !

Anyway, Kem and I were discussing Ed Winfield and all things Winfield, when I spotted this OHV Winfield head mounted on a pedestal...with 2 winfield carbs.
Never had seen one before and thought that maybe a myth.. so hereitis.

I had a chance to buy a unmachined one, but passed. Yes I new they existed, but not supposed to be to many of them. I think I heard somewhere between 3 and 6.

Wow maybe only low as 6 made ! Rare bird , indeed !!
Guess that answers what was to me my next question...i.e.- anyone here ever use one and/or know anyone who owned or used a Winfield OHV head ?

Seems that there were many/many different types (hundred (s) ?) OHV heads made. At times, some never seen (new to me) such heads, unmachined, at swap meets. Amazing variety/ingenuity !

I think only 4 were made originally, more have since been cast but not many. There is/was a guy, I think in Escondido, that has the restored #1 Winfield car. The head was good but I think not any better than some other OHV conversions. Most race cars win partially on design but largely on preparation and knowledge of chief mechanic and driver ability. Those heads also had 4 special Winfield side-draft carbs, which helped in power output. I've seen 3 of those heads, 2 were on running cars.

The pic above shows the head with Model S-D-?? carbs, not the special heads made for that head.

Pretty sure there was one that lived in Nevada for years that was on a running car.

Hey Jim B/ Dan,
Have either of you ever seen that Winfield OHV combustion chamber shape ? Is is 'typical' winfield shape...like iron flathead ?

As the pictured Winfield OHV head was fastened down to display stand, I wasn't able to share that information.

As I remember, it was just a simple round chamber, like a Cragar but much shallower. I was not overly impressed with it.

Thanks Jack, I had forgotten it's shape, much better than many early OHV conversions! Spark plug location is very good.

Is that some sort of casting shift between #2 and #3 cylinders?
