28/29 Brake Light Switch

I have purchased a new brake light switch from Snyder's for my 29. But, after reading many threads about defective repro switches, I am reluctant to install it. Is there any consensus on what the best repro switch is for 28/29? (I know, I used the word "consensus" ... which seems unlikely). :)

The spendy one. $50.00. I think A&L makes them for the vendors. Love mine. (30-31)

A&L only does wholesale now. Call brattons or snyders and ask them for that one...

The 28 & 29 types generally have less problems than the later 30/31. The problems are easier to repair as seen in the video.

On the 28/29 switch, it is easy to repair. On some, the spring when fully compressed, if short, can pull the overall shaft out of the rear of the unit rendering it brake lights on full time. I put threads on the very end of the shaft, and double nutted it so it can't be pulled through. This is only a problem if your brakes are far out of adjustment with a long brake pedal stroke.

Almost positive A&L only makes 30-31 stop light switch. For 28-29 you're stuck with a cheap repro. You could also call Berts and see if they have a good original there.

Yes, your correct. Only the 30/31.

Get an original one anywhere you can. A&L probably makes a good one, but originals can sometimes be found for less than $10 at swap meets. I’ve given up on the repros. Too bad the Portland Swap Meet was cancelled this year.

Thank Ray. I think I will go on the hunt for an original.

You could try Tom at Model A Ford Works in Portland. He has a lot of original stuff. 503-410-1091.

The switches available from the vendors are no good on RHD cars. Does anybody know what the RHD switches looked like and how they were installed?

Hi Synchro.
The switch was installed on the right hand side chassis rail. The metal used is much thicker than the repro LHD switch. It is basically a flat plate with a half cylinder cover that is held in place with some small tabs. The spring inside is very strong. I can dig out some pics if you wish? Just let me know. My switch is off and early 28 Australian "Tourer"
