vacuum source

Newbie to early V8's. Where and what is the source for the wiper vacuum. I have a loose line with a brass fitting floating around the fuel pump.

Thanks

What year flathead? Post a picture of what you have if you can....

You don't say what year, but the vacuum source on my '46 comes from a port located just below the carb on the back side of where the carb bolts on. The steel line goes to the distributor advance plunger and the rubber hose goes to the wipers.

Forgot to attach this picture of the vacuum source. The silver colored part with the hex goes through the banjo fitting with a copper washer on each side of the banjo.

The banjo line goes to the distributor.
Actually to the port in the front cover. The hose is for vacuum wipers.

What's the silver thingy right after the banjo but before the rubber hose called? Does it have internals? A one way valve Or just a fitting.

Re: vacuum source

As far as I know, it’s just a fitting. When I had it apart,I could see through it, so unless a previous owner did something to it,it’s just a fitting to make the connection.

Sorry I didn't put year. It is a stock 35 V 8

Re: vacuum source

Dave, If your engine is stock as you say, the fitting will screw into the aft driver side intake manifold. It will be a threaded hole near the manifold's mounting bolts, similar to another vacuum hole on the same line forward, which should be connected to the distributor for the vacuum break. The previous answers given you would be correct for a later engine.

Not real easy to see in this photo of the top, but if you look at the bottom of the manifold you can see the channels that connect two adjacent ports for the vacuum source.

Re: vacuum source

.

You are looking at the driver side of this intake manifold. There are TWO sets of DOUBLE holes. Find the set of 'double' holes toward the rear (right side of picture). The BOTTOM, threaded hole in that pair of holes is the vacuum source for your wipers. There is also a similar DOUBLE pair of holes toward the front (left in picture). The bottom, threaded hole in that pair is source for distributor vacuum. Same as JSeery picture above, but a little larger...easier to see! DD

I think that "silvery thing" is a silencer to quiet the manifold vacuum noise . ?? someone will know?

Seems like that's what I've read, also. DD

Thanks Guys. Seems like someone put a bolt in the rear vacuum hole. I check in the morning.

Got the car started and running pretty well. Just bought it in July and had been sitting for 10 years. Sounds great!
