1939/1940 Horn Suppliers
 

My son picked these up in St. Paul, Minnesota for me and brought them down on Turkey day. Seller used to have a '39 Mercury and had this extra set of horns just in case he ever needed them. There was no paint showing as they were covered in years of dirt/grease etc. so I spent the morning cleaning and adjusting them back to good working order. When I took the cups off I was very happy to see the the inner workings looked factory fresh, didn't do more than clean the contacts. I've seen Spartan-Jackson horns and was curious about other horn suppliers like these "Schwartze". Were they indeed a Ford/Mercury supplier? Thanks, (Bet Kube knows!)

Gary, that is a nice looking set of horns. I hope you gave your son the pick of the drumsticks for those.

Gary, In all my days, I've never seen a set from Schwartze.
Makes me wonder if they were a replacement.
I've not seen anything that stated they were a supplier to Ford in 1940.
I can't speak to other years and certainly can't offer anything more. Sorry :(

Thanks for the info Mike. I was suspicious about them as they did not have fluting down the length of the trumpets like a pair I saw on Saturday that are on a 1940 4 door sedan. Was surprised to see a name inside as well, maybe replacements is what they are.

After a little googling it looks like they were used on WWII Jeep’s, with Spartan also being a supplier.

For what it is worth, which isn't much, Schwartze was a supplier of horns to Ford in earlier model years. Judging from the relative number of surviving examples, they supplied but a small fraction of those supplied by Sparks-Withington (Sparton, not Spartan).

Thanks Dave. That sheds the most proverbial light on these yet. I don't recall seeing them listed as a supplier in 40. However, my memory is not what it once was. I think...

I am curious as to the length of the trumpets from the flat surface to the end of both horns. I have seen some horns that look like 40s but are slightly different. Perhaps Mercury. Also, do the bells have a screw in the center of the back or not, judging from the strap with the name on it, probably not.

Bells do have a screw in center of cap. Will do a measurement later this afternoon after work. Also thought it was interesting that voltage was indicated, thought 6 volts was the only game in town.

Why is everyone saying "SCHWARTZE" ? THE NAME STAMPED INTO THE HORN BELL SUPPORT PIECE IN PHOTO IS "SCAWARZE" ???

Your correct that there is no "T" but there is an "H" so SCHWARZE not SCHWARTZE. Using a google search they do come up as earlier horns for automobiles as well as Jeeps.

Look again. The third letter is an "A" not an 'H'.................

Here's a couple more pics showing length of horns from base. Some pics of mechanism and better? photo of name.Also attachment area, like a J rather than a hard attachment if that makes sense. Sorry for the initial misspelling but hey I live in Wisconsin and the German is strong here. These little horns are causing a stir LOL. Best to all here.
