Black and Decker Valve refacer

I've got someone wanting to sell me a Black and Decker Super Service Valve Refacer for $100. Does anyone have any information on these? Thanks

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

I don't have any info other than I have one and use it, if it has the stem grinder on the right hand end, and the correct collets, rip his arm off!
Mine is the "Valve Master" I use bands cut from small (13") inner tubes as replacements for the drive bands as mine were both perished. Normal "V" belt from motor to grinding wheel.
Mind your back when you pick it (try to) up, they be damn heavy!
Martin.

Grab it, that's a great valve grinder, and the butt grinder on the other end is great, I've had mine for 50 years, I replaced the belts about 10yr's ago. the collets are a lot getter the ball bearing chucks. Goodson has the wheels for them. Walt

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

I have one also and it came with a tool box that contained a hand held valve seat grinder with stones and pilots and also a valve stone dressing stand. So with advice from Walt I ground the stems on my last 2 rebuilds.
I also got reprints of the instruction manual from www.BeamEquipment.com

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

That looks lots newer than mine. I think mine's 30's, has a real nice winged style badge with valve master on it.
Thanks for instruction link, I worked it out by guess work and playing with scrap valves.
Martin.

Wasn't it nice when B&D made REAL tools?

Hard to change my thinking when Black and Decker, Porter Cable, etc became Chinese junk. Craftsman tools are now made in China as well.
Keep your old tools, they are quality you cannot buy today.

I have a B&D valve grinder as well. Nice machine, but there is nobody supporting them any more. You can find stones, from other brands, which will fit the B&D. But if your looking for different size collets, ETC, good luck. I suspect that this is why a lot of people are dumping their B&Ds.

That machine is around 1970 give or take a few!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I still own a fairly new one with less than 6 months use. I keep it here for a "backup" if necessary!

I have an old one also. It is Red in color and has a container and pump to run coolant on the valves while refacing. Do not want to run coolant on sodium filled valves they tell me. I also have the seat refacer with everything to do flat head engines with. I still use it.

My red one I think is from 1946 --that is the year the 1 man shop opened, it was kept near perfect, no wear, I have probably doubled it's use ---when the original belts came apart I used rubber bands for a while

The black one is my 2nd machine,, I bought it at Hershey, it has a 1927 date on the armature, this machine is well worn but it has capabilitys that most other machines don't ---the valve chuck is a Jacobs chuck---0 to 5/8, good for making special bolt heads, stepped drills----the ways are very worn, and it isn't something you want to stand in water and touch----but it will do valve that won't fit most machines

Thanks for all the information. It looks a lot like the red one in Kurts post (but not in that good of shape). I will post some pictures of it if and when I get it.

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

I have owned one for about 40 years, collet replacement parts are available at Goodson and you can purchase stone to arbor adapters to use Sioux stones if needed, B&D
made machines for Van Dorn also. I have bought replacement parts from VanDorn
machines to service mine.

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

just want to mention with anything this old you might have some "issues". I was happily using mine this morning when it had a little fire. Seems oil had seeped into the armature area and upon further inspection all of the wiring has pretty much deteriorated. I am going to bring it to an electric motor repair shop and hopefully have it all gone through.

Re: Black and Decker Valve refacer

Howdy boys, I was just given one. WOO HOO! Already used it, but it needs to be taken apart and cleaned up pretty bad. And as Kurt in NJ says, I wouldn't stand in water when using it! I think I'll see if I can ground the plugs. Not a sparktrition, so I'll leave that up to a buddy of mine...... Have any of you torn it down completely and cleaned it up? I think that's what it will need. Thanks guys!

Currently in the process of re-assembling mine after cleaning, replacing bearings, painting and re-wiring. Will send some pictures after I figure out how to post then.
