1929 STEEL BACK 60C Blind Back HISTORY
 

I brought back a 1929 STEEL BACK rear section from Hershey for what I'm told is a 60C. A friend has doors and a cowl that I'll look at soon. How rare are they, is it just a steel section that I can interchange with a Leather Back? Please help me get up to speed on this body. Photos of others or a finished car would be great. Thanks Bob:)

Its my understanding that there are only about 17 Known 29 Blind back, steel back, Sedans between both MAFCA and MARC.

Check member Roster for MAFCA and look up Paul Long or Bruce Robinson; they both own 29's and I'm sure one of them would be glad to e-mail you some photos.

Paul got his car from the original owner in Sacramento, Ca.
Bruce purchased his car from a man in California; Marco did the upholstry, its beautiful.

Thanks Ron, I bought the rear section Tuedsay night in the dark thinking it was for a 1931 Blind Back and I cound have something rare. If there are only 17 '29's I guess that is even more rare. I'll post photos as soon as I get it home. Shopping at Hershey with a Mine Van is new to me, great to have friends with half full trailers.

There was one (29) just sold off Craigs list up in Southern Washington in the last two months. Sorry I don't have any photos. I would venture to guess that for every one listed in the above named clubs there are probably two or more NOT listed.

It's in my driveway now. Note the unusual aluminum tacking strip on the top, I was told it is correct by a 60C owner at Hershey. I'm really impressed with the factory weld up both sides of the back to mate 3 pieces into one. Took a hinge photo, I'll need the two on the right side. Can someone confirn if this is Briggs or Murray? Thanks, Bob

Bob,

Just saw the pictures you posted.

I could be wrong as I'm not a specialest on the 29 Steelback, Blind back, however the two sedans I've seen don't have the rear top trim like your body back; they have an insert top like a coupe or two door. the metal runs straight thru and doesn't jog out like the body in your photo ?
Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in, or post a question to Marco as he did the apholstry and top on Bruce Robinsons Blind Back.

Thanks Ron, I have to dig out the original sales receipt for my Grandfathers 1929 Ford, this may turn out to be a twin to the one he had. Fate may have stepped in on this deal. Bob

Bob,

When Bruce Robinson purchased his 29 Blind back Steel back, the man had all the original wood that was duplicated and the new wood was installed in the car; Bruce didn't want the old original wood so I took it and turned it over to Paul Long, who also has a 29 Blind back Steel back, who is also a cabinet maker. Paul has stored all this wood to use for patterns in case someone need a wood kit. Paul is an excellant craftman, a cabinet maker, and has made 5 station wagon bodies, even had the special tool made to cut the special finger joints in the body over the rear wheels.

Thanks Ron! Is is so easy for me to get sidetracked on another project. This just may be a doable project now that I know the wood is out there. What is in the rear section looks good in some places. I have to look at the doors and cowl section a friend has, I know he said the main rails are in need of replacement. Funny how closed cars are starting to look good to me, maybe it is the colder weather.

I know what you mean about closed cars; I drive my 30 Coupe much more than my 29 Roadster; the Coupe also has more room, better seats, better steering, and much warmer when the weather turns cold.

My 82 year old bones don't take the cold like they did 48 years ago !!!!!!

:rolleyes: If you think the wood price is outrageous, ...wait until you see what is involved installing it.:eek: Below is a July 1929 Briggs 60C we made the wood kit for and restored.

yeah we had a real project on our hands replacing just 3 pieces of wood. we had to replace the two long upper pieces where the rain gutters nail into and the also center the door posts. We also replaced the header. To get to the top pieces we had to remove the whole rear pannel(like your piece that you bought)and the two upper over the door pieces. that was alot of nails.tk
