Selfmade a top boot
 

Hi,


does someone have a sewing sheet / construction plan of the 'top boot' for the folded roadster roof (standard)?

The high additional costs 125 shipping + 26% EU / BTW on the total amount make me consider sewing this tarpaulin myself.

Hi Werner! Best advice is to look at pictures until you have a "feel" for what your dealing with. I would suggest then using paper or thin cardboard to make a pattern. Use an upholstery sewing machine to avoid problems.

Werner, Go directly to the Sailrite website. So much info, and the pattern material I bought...I think is called scrim? There is a lot of teaching video on youtube from Sailrite.

Agree with #2 above. Woolies in Uk have all fabric and fittings needed. I used an ordinary domestic sewing machine , made a paper pattern with quaility paper ( not newspaper) and end result was an accurate top boot that fitted the car neatly.

Werner, here are some photos of the top boot for my '28 roadster. I don't know if it is correct per the Judging Standards, but it came with the top. I hardly ever put it on, it's kind of a PITA. If you want more, let me know. Vern

Vern, thank you for the helpful pictures. I see snap fasteners on the front hem to the backrest. I can not assign them. Where are they sitting at?

Werner, I think the snaps are to attach at the top rail behind the seat, but I'm not certain. There are no snap fasteners behind the seat top on my roadster.

Hi Werner,

I looked though some original Ford factory photos showing 1928-1929 Roadsters with top boots and found the following photos that might be of help. I have cut out and enlarged the top boots so that you can best see how they look and fit and also the position of the fasteners, etc:

Note not only the position of the various snaps, but also the two slots where the roof tie-downs protrude through the top boot at the two top rear edges/corners of the boot.

I would like to see an image of a Phaeton with the boot on and how the rear snaps get snapped in place when you have a trunk box sitting right up against the body.


I have never been able to get mine to SNAP!

Interesting that none of the snaps along the top of the seat back are fastened to anything. I though it was just me.

What is the function of the snaps then? I've never observed a roadster driving, but I assume the open leading edge billows up like an air brake or vinyl tops do on older cars?

The snaps on my standard roadster boot fasten to their counterparts on the vertical inside surface (ie not the horizontal top surface) of the wooden rail behind the seat back. If not fastened here the boot will billow in the wind at speed as mentioned.

Because therfore the working time is expansive high, so I postpone the production of the large boot until the winter time.

But I am currently sewing a small tarp that prevents the folded roof from fluttering and look a little bit better. I made the test pattern out of an old bed-sheet. It is attached to the roof rails eyelets at the bottom, together on the nipples. Then the roof get folded and the other end of the tarp is popped onto the front roof buttons with snap bottons. Then that can't flutter.
The testing fits. Tomorrow I do it with black thick linen fabrik.

done the small part. Looks better than before and nothing flutters anymore.
