sealed bearing fan hub
 

I'm considering making a sealed bearing fan hub for my 59 AB motor and was wondering if anyone knew of an engineered drawing for one. If I can find a drawing it will save me reinventing the wheel as it were.

Would be best to provide us with more information into what it is you're trying to accomplish, what car, what chassis, what radiator, what water pumps, what belt size/system, fan location, etc..

If you're just trying to create a hub to mount a fan in a location like a 32 - 36 (and beyond) years had, then there are many ways to skin the cat. One of the easiest ways is to take an old generator (where the fan mounted in front - assuming the right location) - then pulling the guts out of it, making a short little case (say 3/4" to 1" long in the middle - cutting down the original), using the ends of the generator with the bearings and making a shaft for the middle. I forgot which year generators have roller bearings on both ends - seems like there is something to remember/know here?

Another approach that I've seen is to buy one of the old Corvair fan hubs - has a nice big bearing in the middle and you can easily work from it (making the 'mount' piece that bolts to wherever you need the fan to be). These hubs are available as NOS and can save you a lot of time/work in starting from scratch. I have one I can take a picture of if you need me too.

Anyway, give us some more to go from - then you'll get some better ways to approach the problem. Am I correct in assuming you have machine tools/capabilities to make things - like shafts?

B&S; I'm just trying to do a direct replacement for the oil type hub on my very stock 45 pickup with the usual 59 AB motor and stock type radiator etc. I have a couple of the stock hubs and haven't had any real problems but I don't want any problems either. I just think a sealed bearing type of hub is a far better choice. And yes, I do have the tools and capability to make one from scratch.

I hadn't thought of trying to use any type of stock hub from another vehicle. A picture and dimensions of the Corvair one would be appreciated.

Here is a mechanical fan that we built from scratch for HEARD's '36 Ford coupe with an 8BA engine. Because of the rearward slant of the radiator on a '35 and 36, it's about impossible to use an 8BA-type fan without it hitting the radiator, and ELECTRIC fans are for those who settle for the 'easy' way out! DD... I'm a little surprised at the fan shown in your pict... I've never found those fans to move enough air. I've thrown away a few of those.

Bob, I use a fan like that shown by V8 and it works good. Engine is 239 V8. Radiator is Griffin Cobra bought in 1999. Shroud is also Griffin. Alum. fan hub pulley is home made. V8's Corvair set up is the best way to go, if possible.

If you read the accompanying expose in my link above, Jim Pullen (19Fordy) was indirectly the inspiration for this project when I noted that solid, fan-lowering metal body in a picture of the 8BA in his gorgeous black '40 coupe. That hand-fabricated chunk of steel allows you to get the fan down low enough that the fan blades clear the radiator core. That specific fan blade is manufactured by a well-established fan blade manufacturer....not some offshore, back-yard hack shop. It is the only blade of any quality that we could find that would physically fit the space we had to work with, which is one of the main problems faced with installing an 8BA in a '36....limited space for a mechanical fan. That fan has proven itself to cool Heard's engine in the Florida summer heat, even just sitting there while idling, thank you. DD

In this thread, Art Newland details making a bearing fan hub for his '49 F-1. I'm looking into doing the same thing but haven't got a lathe large enough to do the machining necessary. He's got the necessary drawings attached in the posts.......

Not sure this guy is still in business . . . worth checking out. Obviously if you buy just the shaft and bearing, you can make your own hub. But, if I had his to start with - would save some time and the price he showed was more than fair.

Why re invent the wheel ?
The stock 1949 V8 passenger car fan has a sealed bearing, four blade fan & a wide belt pulley.
They inter change with the 59A stuff, plus they are available.

Definitely a quick fix but not necessarily the best. Those smaller "water pump" sized bearings have a small dynamic load rating. I'll take the larger bearings with their 2146# load rating.

The issue with my expensive aluminum fan hub is I have to run about zero for belt tension...... basically close to squealing. Too much of a PITA.
What looked to be a solution is not so great.

Looks like the new aluminum hub has to much bearing surface and not enough belt surface. Un less you use a longer belt and a tensioner. JMHO

I've ordered all the material to assemble an Art Newland-style pulley.
I'll waterjet the plate and bribe someone to turn the shaft and the bearing housing for me.....

Just finished this factory-style fan pulley with sealed bearings inside. Kudos to Art Newland for his design & drawings.
Installed today. Nice and quiet and no fan belt squeal. (I had to run the
old aluminum pulley setup with nearly no belt tension because the sealed
bearings used in that were rated so low for load)
