Trans identification in my 36'
 

Due to the questionable background of my truck I need to I.D. components as I begin to work on them. Is it possible to date a transmission by serial #? This one has the #68-7222 with a large number 1 beneath. The clamshell to the torque tube has B4514-B on it with a Lg. 1-B beneath. My truck was built out of the wrecking yards in 51'. There are a few different yrs. represented in this old boy. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

should add that this is a three speed synchro trans. Just have concerns about ordering parts.. thnx- Q

Date serial number is on the bell hiding under your floorboards. Parts are readily available for it.

Once you have dated the case from the serial number the gears could be later or earlier as well as the shift tower being later or earlier. See http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm for the rest of the story.

Str8pipes- Thanks for pointing that out. I have a spare Trans tucked away, I will look at that one to see where it is placed on the bell.
Charlie- That's also true. Certainly in my case. This truck was put together from a pile of parts spanning many years. The guys that did the build are gone now, so there is no one to ask questions. Thanks for the advice. - Q

The number 68-7222 is the casting number used on the shifter housing from '36 - '38, not the serial number of the transmission. As someone else already mentioned, the serial number is usually stamped at the top of the trans bell just above the sheet metal inspection plate for the clutch. If the transmission case is original to the truck, that serial number will tell you the year and month that vehicle was manufactured.
one way that we could help you ID things on this truck would be posting pictures of the items/parts in question.

Get the shifter tower off to inspect the gearset. Put the shifter into neutral first, then remove the six hex bolts and lift the lever and housing straight up. Compare the gears inside with the examples in this group of gearsets.

JM- thanks for the heads up. Going out to the garage today and spend some time with the truck. Will look further and date this thing. Try to post photos when possible.
