Throw out bearing
 

Is there an “easy way” or trick to replacing a throw out bearing on a 36 truck without having to remove everything?

What’s the best process for this?

No easy way.You have to pull the trans.2 ways to do it.Pull the engine or drop the rear end and pull it back. Pulling the rear is the least PITA,IMO.Either way its a PITA.Make sure the clutch and PP is good before reassembly.

I almost think it’s worth just having a very loud racket on tbt throw out bearing no more then it’s getting driven VS taking it apart.

Pressure Plate.Also replace the hub return spring if you do the job.

All of these parts are new, the truck has about 100 miles on it. I’m thinking (hoping) its the throwout bearing that maybe I had it adjust wrong.

The only adjustment for the throw out bearing is the linkage from the clutch pedal to the arm on the trans.There should be maybe 1/2-3/4" play on the pedal before it engages the TOB. .You might have it to tight.Do you have a USA bearing or offshore?

I’m going to take the floor out and check it. The bearing is what Mac Vanbelt sent when he rebuilt the tranny.

Would a bad TOB make a terribly awful sound of metal grinding? It’s intermittent so I’m a 10 minute drive I might here it a couple times? It happens with clutch in.

Then the bearing should be good.Is that little return spring connected? You can see that when you remove the insp cover.Metal grinding sound - not good.
When I first got my '33 together and running I had a similar sound ,I had no play in the pedal.It was to tight-in other words the bearing was constantly riding on the clutch fingers.I backed off on the adjustment and it cleared up.

Try messing with the adjustment if there is no play.If to far off you won't be able to get it in gear while running.I think the bearing is sealed.

There really isn't anyway to grease a throwout bearing. When is it making a noise, clutch pedal in, out, changing gears, just driving along?

If Mac sold you the TOB, then you got American made best !

100 mi use may not seem like much, but if that bearing has been too tight all that time....well, they are not bullet proof from abuse.

Question: how long did you run it , during the 100 mi, till you started hearing the 'squeal' ? Once they make that type noise....I'd replace it, as it will only get worse with time. However, proper adjustment may give more time/service until ?

There is a way to grease, but the average guy is not going to do that. And that would be best done on the bench.... while it feels/looks usable yet.

I just did all that with mine. It was a Atena brand [American?] It spun far too easy for a throw out bearing. I returned it and got a National one.. You really shouldn't be able to spin them as they are packed with grease. Maybe thats your problem..?

Could have been installed the wrong way and fingers are rubbing on non turning back side of bearing. Would not be a first.

I found out that you do not use on that comes in an unmarked white box..!!
