Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago Was a fun video . . . though I wonder about his final HP number - seems higher than I would imagine. BUT - we all know that folks who run dyno's always want their customers to "like the numbers" they get.
Given the mild Isky cam, stock valves, stock ports --- my guess is the HP is a bit optimistic -- but it still looks to be a good solid 293 cubic inch flathead and I'm glad that folks are spending time building them and posting videos! |

Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago I also agree on the horsepower numbers, but at least they didn't have any of that 200 hp BS. Good job of pointing out those useless little air filters. Also curious that they didn't drill the lifter bores to ease lash setting.

Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago I thought the whole thing was well presented and well put together. It's nice to see spotless parts going in in spotless conditions. With the cost of these parts these are big boys toys, especially factoring in shop time in such a place. I might have done some things a little different, but No, on reflection I'd say a job well done. I wouldn't mind running that lump.
Very surprised to see it hanging off the bellhousing I would have thought anyone who knows a thing or two about flatheads would know it isn't an old wives tale that they can and will break. I think his very substantial brackets on the engine stand head may be working in his favour. I only tend to work on flatheads so everything he was pointing out as unusual was just normal fodder to me. Thanks for posting the link, I enjoyed watching the video. Mart. |
Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago So, now I have to replace those pretty little air cleaners on my Offy tri-power manifold with Big 97's. Not that I really ever need that last 17 horsepower.
Any suggestions? Not going to be running any dirt roads, so maybe just go with scoops with screens. While I am on that subject, does it matter which way the scoops face? |
Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago Seems like they would want to rejet with the air cleaners for maximum power. I wonder if some of the power loss was due to the engine running too rich? I'm also curious whether any clearancing was required with the 4.25" stroke?

As to those little chrome air cleaners, I replaced mine with a homemade air cleaner and noticed a lean condition afterwards. Haven't fixed it yet. Will have to go up a few jet sizes.

It is obvious, the narrator was not a flathead engine guy and was just reading from a script with many errors. The Bonneville engine has a lot of potential. It is a proven design. Just a matter of time before the stupid SCTA bans any block welding. |
Re: High hp flathead build posted 20 hrs ago I don’t know the builder Keith but did know his late brother Randy very well. Keith built the engine Derick Cope won the Daytona 500 with some years ago. I do know Keith has built several flatheads. I agree the dyno numbers seem “happy “
