Fuele Mileage question....

Hello,

I have a stock 24 stud flathead V8, tuned up and running good with Stromberg 97 carburetor and electronic ignition. 3 speed manual transmission and I drive conservatively around town. What would be an average miles per gallon rate.

Thank you,
Bruce in California.

Just guessing that realistically 12-16 mpg around town.

Weight of the vehicle, engine cubic inches, rear end gear ratio, and driving conditions (cruise speed, stop/go, etc.) will have an impact. In my '41 coupe with 284 inches and 3.25 rear end, I get 16 mpg on the highway at 60 - 65 mph.

always tune a street engine for cruise, as t spends 90% of it's time there. I use an AF meter and look for 14.7/15.2 at 2400 (60/65) with an L-100 cam. Distributor need allot of advance 26/28. Takea alittle putzing, hard to get with a Stromberg carb, don't know why.

My ‘50 Fordor is stock with a 94 and it gets 17-18 MPG just driving back and forth to work. It went up from 12-14 when I put in 180* thermostats........ Mark

Re: Fuele Mileage question....

I have found getting rid of the roofing tar in the crankcase and changing to 10-30 or thinner motor oil also helps the gas mileage.
Also backing off the accelerator pedal and coasting the last half a block before the stop sign helps too.
They say pulling extra air in the tires does not help! Oh ya?
Push your vehicle in neutral on level concrete and the try it again with extra air in the tires and see if there is a difference.
As for the man’s question,.....anything above 12 in town is GREAT!

I have my truck tuned that way, but around town (35 -45 mph speed limits) and with stops/starts, averaging 13. On the highway (55-60) close to 17, but these trucks are like pushing a barn door thru the air, just not getting better than that.

It,s best to not check it in town! I would guess about 10 mpg.

I don't know (or care) what I get for mileage. 2 97's on an Almquist intake with Kogel hi-comp heads, Pertronex, Red's headers. I just put more gas in when it gets to about a 1/4 tank. Having too much fun!! Spring can't come too soon.

My 52 Merc did 15 to 16 mpg combined town and gravel road/pavement driving last time I checked. Canadian gallons of course so do your .83 conversion to U.S. I thought it was not bad for an automatic and all stock equipment.

Re: Fuele Mileage question....

I never checked the 46 Tudor I had, the 39 with 60 hp got 25 if I kept it under 60, fell to 20 at 70, for quite a few years I drove a 1-1/2 ton truck with 2 ton loads to area flea markets , it could get 18 when kept to 50-55, it got sold to a guy in California to transport a airplane, the truck went coast to coast in 4 days averaging 15 mpg, I think it was driven over 65 though
For those that get low fuel mileage and use the excuse of smiles what abou the oil dilution and fuel washing oil off cylinder walls???not to mention the excess exhaust emissions
