T85/r11

Does anyone know the weight of the T85/R11 transmission? Going to install one in 55 Crown. My Son has a lift so getting it up is no problem but lifting it may be.
Thanks
Ben

I think they're getting heavier as the years go by.
Had to use a small engine hoist to get one in and out of the back of my truck. ;)

Kultulz-thanks for the weight info. And dmsfrr, I hear you on them getting heavier as the years go by. I even went to a smaller sized coffee cup to keep weight down.

The T85 R11 is the heavy duty 3-speed & OD. They are relatively heavy for a car & light truck transmission but they can take more torque and especially if it is the R11N with the nodular housing. These will hold up to a 390 FE in an F100 pickup truck.

Well that explains why as the 125lb weakling I need help from my 190lb friend to wrestle the T85 O/D into my 55 bird. Worse when it went in for real with the engine attached.

Wasn’t that used behind the early 406’s before the 4 speed come out? Or is my memory playing tricks? They are a tough unit.

Re: T85/r11

The T10 was based on the T85 3-speed but there are variations of the T-10 as well and some are better than others for performance. If a person wants a higher speed overall than a 1:1 drive will give then the overdrive is the best choice. I would take it easy on anything less than a 31-spline top loader. TKO-600 is an option but there are other things to know about the shifting to 3rd and just plain shifting a lot more than a 4-speed. With the T85 R11 and a rear axle that's not too tall, a person can start out in 2nd and only shift once to 3rd. A lot less shifting going on there with the shift to OD being automatic.

I would want a stronger 4-speed or more speeds behind a real healthy large FE engine. The super T10 wasn't bad but it's still only a 1:1 drive in high gear.
