Sound Insulation
 

Any comments on installing sound insulation?
Seems pricey - is it necessary

any alternatives?

Just did my sport coupe with a product from Lowes called peal and seal. It works great! @ rolls did my car and it made a tremendous difference. The cool part............ it cost $18 a roll. 6inches by 24 feet. Its 95 degree here today and I have been driving it since 6:30 this mornin with no odor. I even did the bottom of the floor boards which made a huge change in engine noise. It is a rubberized self adhesive asphalt material with a foil backing. ver easy to install. I am very pleased.

It is pricey and time consuming to do, ....and is it necessary? No, not 'necessary' but I think it is a huge benefit to making a quiet car that also does control heat from entering the cabin from the running gear.

I did my sedan with rubber backed carpet pad. Its strong, thick and glues up with contact cement. I have'nt noticed any smell and it really quiets things down. Paints up nice too!

Since you asked about oil leak the other day this post makes me think of my friend who put insulation on the bottom of the floorboard and ended up blocking the vent at the top of the bell housing. Oil poured out the rear main like Niagra Falls.

Maclab58 has it right. That stuff is great, inexpensive, no odor, and very easy to use. It really works. Makes a huge difference.

When I put it on the floor boards I was concerned about it coming loose and either shorting the battery or plugging the vent. Therefore I used 5/8" cut tacks and racked the seams every 3". I also overlapped the seams 1/2" and lapped them so the wind couldnt catch them.

I installed insulation in my town sedan when I replaced the interior. I installed it for heat reduction but a side benefit was how quite the car is.
To me, it is well worth the cost.

What about the following ( just an idea ) When laying a new hardwood floor we used a glue what was not so easy to spread and and sticked to wood and also metal spatula's like hell. Let's suppose you smear a couple of layers on the inside of the body. It certainly will more mass and I assume some sound dampening

For me, my Model As are time machines and I want to feel, hear, and smell the whole experience. No sound deadening for me.

I agree with Glenn about enjoying all the sounds of the era, but I'm considering doing this anyway as my four-year-old daughter has decided she doesnt want to ride in daddy's old-fashioned car because it's too noisy :-)

I agree with Glenn and enjoy driving the A as is.

In high school I did insulate my 55 Chevy and had the quietest car around. I removed the seats and brushed roofing tar over the entire floor, then layed down two layers of tar paper, then jute padding and carpeting, then some plastic floor mats. That sure made for a quiet car.

This provides me with alot to think about. I build this as a time machine - trying to get original as possible - but have a granddaughter on the way!.

One more question - when you talk floor boards does the insulation go on the bottom or top and the cover with the floor covering?

I put mine on the bottom of the plywood and inside the seat riser. As I described above, I secured the insulation by tacking it down along the 1/2 inch overlap.

I sure wouldn't bother with the plywood. It is a very good insulator in itself.

I can't agree, Mitch. Wood has an R value of approximately R1 per inch. Some of the insulating products for auto use are as high as R7 for a 5/16" thickness.

I'd be afraid of that peel and stick stuff over the muffler without a heat shield. I think it's a rubber asphalt based product but don't know for sure. Gets pretty hot there in the summer and wouldn't want that melting down on my muffler..

Could you post a pic of what the Peel and Seal looks like installed on the firewall? I'd like to see if it's black or silver. If silver, what did you do on the inside of the car where it was visible to cover it? Thanks for the idea! I'm excited to go get some to seal up the firewall and quite the floor a bit.

While I personally don't use it on Model A firewalls, just install it and then choose a similar surrounding color and spray paint it.
