shifts hard

1950 Club Coupe. Shifting from first to second I raise the shift arm up to neutral and the spring does not pull the lever down to go on into second. I must push it forward then on into second It has been this way since I bought it. I have unhooked the arms from the column and the trans seems fine but the column still is very stiff. Tried to remove the shift tube running down the steering column to see what might be the problem but I cannot figure out how to remove it and I find nothing in my Ford manual. Any help on here?

Thanks, Bob. Looks like I need to pull the entire steering column out. Rats!

OR...find another and overhaul it, by then will be an expert and easy swap
I had a valiant that was wore out, recall it a PITA always locking up, manipulating it under the hood to free up. If I knew what I do now, coulda fixed it easy

Re: shifts hard

if you unbolt 7318 and 7319, pretty much all of the moveable stuff easily comes off. I bet you just have a bunch of funk and hard grease and a simple remove, clean, grease, and install will get you fixed up.

one other thing: make sure the shift tube isnt rubbing on the colum drop bracket.

Spring 7227. The moveable parts have to be free enough for the spring to do it's job it makes the shift lever 7210 move properly.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'll start removing all the small parts tomorrow and clean and lubricate them before reassembly. I would start today but it's that time of year for my first grass mowing. Again, thanks .
